Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Advice for the next step

Author: "Michael Regen" <capflyer071@...> Time: Fri Oct 1, 2004 4:17 pm PDT Link

I am very near completion of my empanage and would like some advice
from those of you farther along. I'm debating going all QB which
means the next 5-6 months of no building or going standard wings
with a QB fuselage. This way there is only a 10 week vacation. Any
thoughts on this? Also, I am confused over what exactly the
capacitive fuel senders are and why would I need or want them? With
the standard wings, I would probably still get the pre-made tanks
but I'm not sure about the difference between the floats and
capacitive units.
Thanks,

Mike R

Enjoy the vacation and get everything QB :) If I ever build that -
10, it'll be as much QB as you can get.

Floats were invented at least 75 years ago, capacitive units probably since TV
was invented.

Both work. I have the floats and they are reasonably accurate and they don't
care what the fuel type is. Capacitive senders will work with any kind of fuel
but have to be recalibrated if you switch from Avgas to Mogas due to density
difference.

Capacitive senders are (or least were) not available with QB wings. Don't
know if they are available with QB tanks.

I went with standard wings for the same reason you mention; wanted something
to do while waiting for QB Fuse. I am enjoying the building process on the
wings. After they are finished I figure I will have had about all the
experience riveting I want! Plus you save $4,000!

I went with float type based on opinions I absorbed on this list over
several months.

I should get my wings next week. I went with the capacitive senders
because they have no moving parts. I plan on plenty of upside down flying so
I dont want to worry about moving floats in the tanks. I know this is
probably not correct thinking but that was my thought at least. Of course I
never rely on my fuel gauges, they are required but I plan for fuel burn not
what I see on a gauge. I went with the slow tanks just because I had a hard
time justifying the 1200. I look forward to the messy process of sealing
the suckers, good stories around the hanger. I was also told by the vans
guys at OSH to just have a good plan when doing the tanks and everything
would be fine. Besides, I would rather spend the 1200 on the panel and
gadgets. I am planning on doing all slow mostly because I have time and not
money. Besides, everything is prepunched so there is time saved with the qb
but how much? Is it worth 8k or so? I would rather save the money for a new
engine. its all preference. Id rather cleco, drill, and rivet than wait
for someone else build my plane. Yep more time but I will own more of the
plane when Im done. QB or slow, another prime or don't prime discussion.

Thanks for the response. You are correct that the capacitive fuel
senders are not available in the QB and they are also not available
in the QB tank. This is why I'm tyring to figure out the difference
so I don't order a QB wing or tank and find later that I should have
had the capacitive fuel senders. What type of recalibration is
necessary for switching fuels with the capacitive senders?

Thanks again,

Mike R.

Mike, I don't know how to do it but probably it is done by starting with a known
quantity of fuel and adjusting the receiving unit until it indicates the known
quantity.

I went with the capacitive senders. Still building so cant tell you
how good they are, but can tell you that they are pretty fiddly to
install. If I had to choose again I would probably go with the float
system, simple and easy.

Why not go with QB wings and a standard Fuselage. The fuse is much more
enjoyable to build than the wings.

If you opt for the pre-made tanks, can't have the capacitive senders. I got
the tanks and had wanted the capacitive senders, feeling they were probably
more accurate. (High tech and all.) Boo Hoo!

Another consideration. If you plan on an inverted tank, I'm not sure they'll
accomodate that either. It's going to be a little extra challenge now to
install the baffle trap door over that one crossfeed hole.

Bottom line, think it thru completely before you go pre-built.

Mike,

Just an idea: why not ask Vans if you can buy the QB wings without the tanks
and purchase the tank parts separately – The tank is not match drilled to
the wing nor to the outboard leading edge which means that anyone tank
should be interchangeable with another.

What one does not know when starting an RV is that Vans is quite flexible –
you can ask them to remove parts from your order and they’ll credit you for
that. It is not in the order form but it is possible.

Items to consider: Grove landing gears, fuel selector valve, brake
cylinders, prefab parts you’ll refabricate top accommodate some equipment,
Rocket tail wheel replacement of Vans tail wheel springs…
