Hi all!!
I have the new style rudder, with the wedge. My question is for those of you who have used the angle and Pro-Seal method.
How did you use the angle to get the straight edge? Did you dlill holes in the angle, and then cleco the angle to the rudder?? Or clamp it somehow??? I am confused. Any replies welcomed.

I drilled holes in the angle and clecoed it together with a flexible
glue, I didn't use proseal but the same idea applies.
I left it for the stuff to set, a week in all I think, then removed
the angle and clecoes, inserted and carefully squeezed the rivets. My
edge came out straight.

Hi Kevin,
If you go with the proseal just make sure you treat it like your sealing your tanks, scuff the serfs to be sealed, clean with MEK and put on a THIN smooth layer of sealant on the wedge and cleco it together with the angle. After it sets for a few days rivet it together, I alternated the head of the rivets one up one down so the left and right sides would look the same. just make sure the trailing edge has no wave in it,http://groups.msn.com/RV7AFlyers/rudder.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=41
good luck.

I used the shaft of an old hockey stick (a good one) "match" drilled

Hi kev,
I used a locally available epoxy and a piece of angle aluminium which
measured up as pretty straight. I drilled and clecoed as advised. It
is no big deal. See
http://members.optusnet.com.au/rv7/rud.htm
Take it slow and easy and you will come out of it OK.

Kevin, The rudder trailing edge riveting is a lot easier than they
make it out to be. Just match drill through the angle material and
then cleco the edge while it sets with the proseal. After a couple
days you can remove the angle and use a squeezer to set the rivets
part way. Then backrivet with a flush set. Be careful not to pinch
the skin with the flush set as you will be holding it at an angle. A
small diameter mushroom works best.

I did my empenage at Alexander Technical Center and omitted the
proseal, as they suggest, for expediency. They suggested that "if
you want," I could proseal later. Hmm. I can see how that could
get messy. I'm wondering what other ATC builders have done.
Proseal externally? Use another product? Omit sealant altogether?

I made a reply not but last week and this is what I did. Assemble the
rudder in the back and cleko every hole(alternating cleko direction one to
the left, one to the right). Then stand it on end or on the leading edge so
that it doesn't sag. Then remove one at a time the cleko from center out
alternating and put in a rivet and partially squeeze. You should have a
near perfect alignment, I did. Then put the rudder flat down and prop up
the leading edge and put your back rivet plate along the trailing edge and
starting from center, finish pounding in the rivets with the gun. I looked
my rudder over, sighted down the edge and put a straight edge on it and I'm
very happy with it. Best of all, no mess and I now can spend my time on
other things, like that tip on the top, finally got that thing finished off.

Hi Kevin,
I used the angle and proseal, and after match drilling
the angle to the skin I match drilled them to a stout
length of aluminum angle I purchased from the local
hardware store. Proseal was then applied sparingly to
the angle and the whole thing clecoed to the angle. I
waited several days for curing, cleaned the excess
proseal then riveted the trailing edge together along
with a few other rivets left out for convenience while
working with the wedge. I was concerned with the
angles between both sides of the trailing edge as the
rivets go straight through, so from each side I
drilled straight into the wedge. This left an
elongated hole in the wedge and I thought I'd blown
it. The key to setting the rivets is to set them in
stages a little at a time, I used three steps for
this. The scary part of the process was with the final
setting. As I progressed up the rudder an offset
developed from the rivet I had just set to the next in
line but the edge straightened itself out as the final
setting of the rivets progressed. The final result was
a very straight edge much to my relief! If you'd like
a picture of the trailing edge clecoed to the angle,
let me know. I inserted all the rivets from the same
side, the result looks very uniform.
Good luck,
Robert

Thanks Steve, I did read your earlier post, and it was that thread that prompted my question. I take it, from the absence of mention of Proseal that you, too, did not use it. I don't think Proseal has anything to do with getting a straight edge but, rather, supposedly offered an anti-vibration component or fatigue resistance to the rudder edge. I wonder if someone else has seen this after not applying proseal. Mike

Mike -
I'm just omitting the sealant completely, for what it's worth. The
rudder came out extremely straight, so as been previously suggested on
this list, I don't think that the proseal has much to do with how
straight the rudder comes out - I'll be watching for stress cracks once
the airplane is flying, though, but I suspect it'll be fine.
FWIW, the Alexander folks didn't tell me about the "proseal later"
route, and I did the workshop this past May.

from what I read in the manual it is to insure a straight edge. Also
someone else called vans and asked if it was ok to revit without any sealer,
they said yes. I did put a spot of silicon in the middle of the rudder on
the stiffners for rattle sake. What this will do, I have no idea. Just did
it.
