Author: Greg Carnforth <greg@...> Time: Sat Oct 2, 2004 4:45 pm PDT Link

Hey folks,
On the fuel tanks, the flanges on the end ribs (inboard and outboard) do not contact the fuel.
Is it necessary to butter up the flanges and seal the rivets as I have the inner ribs, or will a nice filet of Proseal on the inner sides suffice?
Thanks,
Greg Carnforth

This appears to be a prime area for leaks. So you want to really lay
on the ProSeal on the inside. And I figured, personally, that it
couldn't hurt to really be generous on the flanges...especially
around the flutes and, of course the rivets...and the seams.

I applied a bead between the flange and the skin, but not on the
outside of the rib. I did dab a little on each rivet head (can't
hurt). On the inboard end, nutplates will be installed on the inner
surface of the skins (between the edge of the skin and the flange of
the ribs). These nutplates hold screws that attach the wing root
fairings, basically a strip of aluminum that closes the gap between
the inboard end of the wing and the side of the fuselage. As you
build your tanks, keep in mind that you will need about 1/2" of tank
skin between the edge of the skin and the edge of the inboard rib
flange. Hope this makes sense.

Why take the risk? I don't see the gain in NOT buttering everything up.

There was an ancient proverb that says... "He who skimps on the Pro-seal
will soon be fixing leaks". :-) Put that black stuff on every surface
you can.

Godspeed,

Phil
