Started riveting rear spar / spar doubler and hinge bracketts. They say practice makaes perfect. I guess I need practice. The 427-4-6 rivets and the 470-4-7 rivets were just abit to long. This created a head that was the right diameter but abit high. I also had a couple of rivet shop heads that were on a slight angle. I had my share of rivets that were unacceptable and had to be drilled out. This was caused by learning the appropriate pressure setting for the squeezer and holding the squeezer correctly to the work surfaces.
Now for the ? If the rivets are a bit high but proper diameter or with a slight angle to the top is this acceptable? I am back to wanting perfection but know that there is the plus or minus tolerance to all machines and users of machines.
I am also going to get some of the seasoned EAA chapter members to drop by and give me some help.
Thanks for letting me vent and any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Frank, rarely is a dash 6 or dash 7 (or whatever two lengths ) the perfect dimension. One that is a bit short will give you a head that is either too small in diam or two low in diam. The one that is a bit too long will give you a head that is a little too big either in diam or height. So what? As long as they are very close to the "perfect" set, OK. I try to err on the too long side, BUT, this gives rise to "pushing" off center, or an anvil shape. Not the end of the world either.
The "slight angle" you refer to is probably because you did not have the gun, bucking bar, squeezer, whatever, perfectly square with the rivet shank. As long as it is not really angled move on.... you will have thousands of them like that before you are through with your plane.
I'm not advocating sloppy work, but, a "not perfect" rivet is OK
Good luck, hope this helps, Larry

Frank: I think your rivets are OK, based on your description. There is a mil-spec
document on the web that addresses your concerns. I'm sorry I can't give you the link
because it is on my other computer which is out of commision. Google "riveting" and
"mil-spec" and I think you will find it. Steve Lindberg

The one-half diameter height for the shop head is a MINIMUM height.
It is fine if you have more.

Frank,
I had an opportunity to observe the (riveting) work of a professional
here in Australia a few weeks back. My rivet finish and dimensions are
much better than his. We spoke about the fact that home builders tend
to be paranoid about the quality of their work, getting the dimensions
perfect on every rivet, etcetera. We agreed that it is better to
(slightly) under-shoot rivets than to over-shoot them (leaving only a
thin manufactured head), and that perhaps home builders should be
careful to be safe, but not worry about achieving perfection.
My own personal experience is that I do not worry about having rivets
not quite perfect when they are a few in a large number, e.g. those
holding the skins on to the skeleton. So what if a few are under-or
over-shot, as long as the majority are good.
But I try to be extra careful with the critical structural rivets,
e.g. those few attaching the control hinge plates to rear spars in HS
and VS. Your life really does depend on these.
Just build it, so you can fly as soon as you can.
