I am just a few hours short of getting my Private Pilot Licence. I
am really excited about purchasing a 7A Quick build kit. Questions
I have are:
1. Being a new pilot how difficult is it going to be for me to
transition between the Cessna 172 and the RV 7A? I know the RV is
faster and alot more responsive. I also know alot will depend on
Pilot skills also but would you say the RV is easy to fly?
2. I have never built a plane before obviously so I am going to do
the quick build. Looking at is as a 2 year project hopefully. Is
it really as easy as everyone is making it seem? I have limited
building skills with metal. I can do alot with wood but this is a
whole new ballgame.
3. I am 6'4 250lbs is this plane going to be to small for me? Will
I bea able to fly with a passenger? Have leg and head room etc?
Guess I need to sit in one. Anyone have one at Fox Field in
Lancaster, CA?
4. Last question. I can come up with the $25k for the kit but is
it possible to finance the rest of the project, like Engine Avionics
etc? Also is it hard for a low hour pilot to insure an experimental.
The thought of me purchasing a 30-40 year old (Cessna) plane when I
can build one myself for the same cost just doesn't sit right with
me.
Thanks so much for the help and look forward to building and getting
to know some of you on the board.

I strongly recommend the Sportair workshop. I just took the "Sheet Metal Basics" course,
which is very similar to the "RV Assembly" course. I think it will eradicate any fears you
might have about working with metal. The course was very well taught, and you'll meet a
bunch of kindred spirits.
If you can learn to fly, you can learn to work with sheet metal...it's not that hard.
Enjoy, and welcome!

I feel that working with wood and working with metal is very similar, just
throw in the rivets. If you were able to build a erector set when you were
a kid, and you can follow directions, you should be able to build a plane.
I first started out thinking QB but I changed to slow. I feel I'll still
have the plane done by spring of 06. Within 1 month I got the basics of the
emp done, now I'm working on the adjustments, tips, and sitting waiting for
the wing kit. Due date for those is Nov. 8.

Steve: I don't know what your personal situation is, whether you're
married or have kids or anything, but be VERY careful when giving up
vacations and other things if you do.
The challenge of building -- and I'm speaking only for me -- is
keeping intact those elements of life that are never going to happen
again. Baseball games, anniversaries, birthdays, and yeah vacations
are among them.
If everyone in the house agrees, great. Just make sure they do. My
mantra has always been, "this is MY project, not theirs." And when I
drift off and spend too much time away from them, they're only too
happy to remind me.
A plane is a great thing to have. But memories of the family outings?
Well, like they say, priceless.

The transition to the 7A should not be a big deal. The RV is more responsive, but control back pressures are enough to keep you from overcontrolling. I'm a 700 hr Cherokee driver and transitioned in about 6 hrs.
Insurance for low time pilots will be high. I have full coverage with 90k hull and paid 2k for the first year. Because I have enough hrs, I was able to get reasonable rates and firdt flight coverage. I'm hoping next year's premiums will go down because of time built up in my 7A.
Try to get to an RV assemby seminar or similar weekend class. Use good tools and don't scrimp on items. Plan at least 2K for good new tools. Less if you can find deals.
Financing should be available for kits and components with your down payment. Check the internet and EAA. I spent 80K on my very nicely equipped VFR 7A. It was a QB with all items purchased from Van's except paint and avionics.
I painted it and did the interior myself to save money.

My kids are all grown up and the wife loves the plane project and to fly as
well. So we both agree on this one. Besides that, we have already been all
over the place with the kids and now we want to fly around the country in
the rv so we can sacrifice for now for later. One last thing, the best
things in life are free and being together is the best of all, you don't
have to spend a bunch of money to do it. I now wait for video's or dvd's to
come out, forget the movies. One other thing that me and the Mrs. likes to
do is go to the airport and grab a cup of coffee (from the gas station not
the espresso stand) and go watch the big planes land at the airport. Been
married 27 years and plan a bunch more together, just plan it with the rv,
so now it's build and buy time. Trying to pay cash for it, and might even
start with a takeout 160 with fixed prop for starters with min. VFR to get
it flying and then figure out how I'm going to put the bigger engine in
later.

Roberta,
Who did you use for your insurance broker?
I'm also a 750 hour (approx.) pilot. MEL, Tailwheel and Instrument rated
PPL. I got a quote for $75,001 hull and full coverage from JT Helms at
NationAir for the VanGuard program for approx. $1400 per year (-7A, slider,
0-320 w/CS). That is with first flight coverage and I have 5.9 hours of
transition training with Mike Seagar in the RV-6A. I also had an accident
two years ago which may/may may have added to my premiums....
Just curious.

I am with Falcon right now. I will be looking to reduce my premiums for next year. I did not know Nationair would do first flight coverage. I will be checking for lower rates next year. Hopefully Falcon will be lowering my rates base on time built up in my RV over this year.

Steve,
Building a plane is a very demanding process time wise – think in terms of
thousands of hours before you get to that first flight. I believe that to
achieve such a goal you need to understand your basic motivations and assess
your resources – time and financial ones.
Basic motivations – building should be an end in itself. If you were not
building a plane, would you be building a boat, an antique car, and addition
to your house, clocks… if you build just to save money than you are running
a risk as to quality or plain discouragement. As for QB, it should be a
compromise between loving to build and the need to get the job done in a
reasonable amount of time. I for one build for two reasons – I love to build
and I love to fly – furthermore, RVs are fantastic airplanes – can’t readily
buy them, must build one to have one.
Resources – plan on allocating from 500 to 1000 hours per year. If you think
about it – that’s a lot of time if you already have a busy schedule. It
would mean abandoning some activities – can you afford to do that. The
impact on family life could be positive or negative – be sure that you get
full commitment from your surroundings and that they understand what you
embarking on such a course entails. If your time spent on building is
perceived by your entourage as an escape from marital difficulties, from a
nagging spouse, from noisy children or from whatever, you will just
exacerbate a bad situation.
Finances – think in terms of the global needs over the life of the project,
this includes the basic airplane you get from Vans, extras (paint, corrosion
protection, supplies of all sorts…), tools and furnishings, electricals,
avionics, engine monitoring, the engine and decoration (seats and paint
job).
This being said – building an airplane is a unique fantastic experience, and
then flying it I imagine is even greater – the world is divided into two
populations – those who build their own airplanes and those who don’t.
Hope you make the correct choice given your situation.
Michèle Delsol
