Just for a heads-up for folks flying a carbed engine with electric
fuel pump.
I was on a weekend trip in the rv last Friday.
Engine sputtered and desired to quit about 5 miles from destination.
switch tanks, boost pump, check mixture, you know the routine.
Nothing seemed to help.
I had some altitude and speed and made the runway.
On the upstream side of the elect boost pump had collected a small
wad of what looked like a 'dust bunnie' with some very small alum
chips in it.
You could hardly blow thru the solenoid pump when I removed it from
the plane.
AND had a great Van's story to fix it. Wayne Whitaker was building
a -7 on the field in a hanger. So we pulled his off and installed it
on mine.
Looking backward, I could have just cleaned mine out and it would
have been fine. 200 mile from home with pliers and screwdriver for
tools, changing it out was easiest.
So at the 100 hour time it mine be smart to clean the upside of the
boost pump.
I have flop tubes in both tanks.
Now more convinced the need for a gas filter inline rather than the
gascolator.

Gascolator as opposed to in line filter ....
I'm still at the point in building that I can make a decision. What say the
list about a filter in each gas line before the fuel selector valve PLUS a
gascolator.
Reasoning:
Separate filters off each tank allows a tank switch if one filter plugs up
for any reason.
Gascolator is the filter of last resort for water in the fuel in the event
the plane sits unused for a period of time. (Which would be a crime but the
weather gets cold and yucky in February up here)

Cary, just to clearify for me, this collection of material was on
the intake side of the fuel pump?

the boost pump is a straight thru solenoid type pump, this may not be
a proper term, but it has a hollow steel cylinder with a spring and
two check valves. the elec current causes the piston to jump back
and forth inside the chamber. Hence that gosh awfull noise that it
makes.
The check valves constantly flow and check to cause fuel to flow thru
the center of the hollow piston.
the debris was on the tank side of the pump and clumped up on the
upstream check valve.

Just curious, Cary. Was your fuel pressure gage reading low even after switching on electric pump? I have the standard Van's pickup tubes that don't reach to the bottom of the tanks, like flop tubes. I have gotten some AL particulate out of my tanks from the drains. I have not seen any in the gascolator. Have you found any in yours?
Thanks,
Roberta

ACS and other suppliers sell a one-way valve that can be plumbed in parallel with (i.e. around) the electric fuel pump to prevent this problem. I bought one, but never installed it...

Maybe a few flakes in the gascolator screen.
They seem to have been stopping at the boost pump.
I have a transducer for fuel pressure but I can't seem to get the GRT
electronic box to indicate a value for it on the display.
I am sure its something in the programming that I haven't figured out.

Thanks, Cary. I have to cahnge oil this weekend, so I'll probably go over the fuel system, too. Thanks for the heads up.
