Hi to all:
First chance to use the bucking bar/3x gun off set for 470 rivets on the forward spar / 710,714 stiffeners today. I had a number of the rivets lean to creat a clinched type rivet shop head.I tried nearly everything I could think of to stop this from happening. I had the parts held solid in a vise. Held the gun / bucking bar square as possible. ( I also held my tounge in the corner of my right cheek, held my breath, said a prayer, and rubbed my lucky nickle). Once it got off to the side there was no salvation. I had to drill the worst offenders out and replace. It was almost like gambling some worked out perfect.......and doing the same actions (I thought)...leaning tower of pizzaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I also got a coup[e of small smiles on the machine side. I assumned gun pressure was too high. Any tricks, suggestions, or ideas that will take the uncertianty out of this activity would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help .........................

Many things can cause rivets to lean as they are set. I believe the two
most common problems are the hole is a little to large and the second is the
rivet may be a little long. If you have a gauge check the length and make
sure you are not enlarging the holes two much as you match drill. Hope this
helps.

You could try this. If you have the remote regulator on the rivet gun (pg
31 Avery catalog), crank it down so that you're just getting a few hits per
second and try a few rivets. Increase the hit rate up as you get
proficient. Don't let the cup rivet set bounce off of the head; hold the
bucking bar light enough to allow it to bounce off the shop head, but strong
enough to keep straight. You'll get better with practice.

Frank,
Off set rivet sets can be a little difficult. Add some masking take to the "cup" on the rivet set. This helps keep it from moving on the factory head a bit. It is very easy, if you are not careful when drilling out the rivet, to enlarge the hole. This will just make matters worse. I usually drill off the rivet head and then using a #40 drill "core" out the shank and use a 3/32" punch to knock out the shank. Don't forget to back-up the flange when knocking out the shank. I drill a small piece of scrap wood with a hole so that the wood "straddles" the shop head. Sometimes it is a 3 hand job.
Check the length of the rivet, if it is a bit long file the shank down.
Sometimes the builder wins sometimes the rivet wins.
Best of luck.
Paul

Franck,
In addition to what has been said: put a piece of masking tape on your rivet
set tip – it will alleviate the smiley problem. As for the shop head side,
make sure there is no oil or any kind of stuff that may make the shop head
slippery.
