Bob,

Reinforcing your complaints about careless flying.

Not long ago a Skyhawk was rented at the FBO I am based at by a fellow that
had not been up in three months, he had his brother and brother in law with
him.

They departed the balt/wash ADIZ for a joy ride and after an afternoon of
flying called APP for a discreet code to re-enter.the ADIZ was relatively
new then and there was some delay.after about 30 min he announced to APP
that he might be low on fuel.10 more min. went by and suddenly they were in
a glider.the pilot did a fair job of flaring into some trees and they all
walked away with cuts and bruises, the aircraft was destroyed.

The ADIZ is an unpopular inconvenience so everyone was up in arms that the
ADIZ had finally caused an accident.

I was nearly alone in my assessment that the ADIZ had little to do with the
incident.I argued that there could only be two possible causes for this
"accident".either the pilot intentionally ran his tanks dry.not likely.or he
did not know how much fuel he had remaining.

You see there were at least four strips close by to put down for fuel.

I watch guys every day take off without knowing how much fuel they have.I
rarely see a pilot stick his tanks after arriving at a midway
destination.what happened to "time in your tanks".

My partner in a brand new Tiger never takes a fuel sample.last week my
partner and his PIC instrument instructor arrived at the hanger as I was
doing some maintenance and jumped into the aircraft with out any preflight
at all.it had just been fueled by a lineman.

This is not a training issue it is a laziness issue.a stupidity issue.

True story.

SR

THIS is the scary part. You know, enough stupid accidents and some
neighbor wills tart noticing that planes seem to be falling out of
the sky and then there'll be a movement to close the airport and
then the pilots will sit around and wonder what's the matter with
those homeowners.

Well, I'll tell you what. God has a very effective way of getting
rid of bad pilots.

Bob,
You sure have a way of putting things, I have to say I like it. I rented a
T hanger that housed 4 planes, one next to me and the other two were on the
other side. Well, my neighbor next to me, I never saw until I stopped by
one day during the week and during the day, he opened the door and climbed
in his 172 and hit the key, no clear, no check of nothing and run it out of
the hanger and down the taxiway, no runup and shot up into the air.
