Super service by Stein Bruch. The Alodine pen arrived yesterday.
This is going to make building so much easier. Why prime areas that
don't need priming? And yet this handy little thing will allow me, I
think, to do a faster and better job of priming the areas that do.

For the smart folks: There is reference to a Class 1A and Class 3
What do those mean. The treatment recommended in the technical
bulletin has different processes for each.

This is Alodine 1132. The quarts and gallons of Alodine that we buy
at, say, Oskhosk is Alodine 1201 The latter requires rinsing. the
former does not. but other than that, are there any substantial
differences?

Bob,

>From what I can tell reading all the info that I can find on
Alodine, there is no major difference in the end result between the
1132 touch-n-prep pen and liquid 1201 alodine as long as either are
applied per instructions.

The Class 1A and Class 3 refers to the class of material used for
the conversion coating of aluminum per mil spec MIL-DTL-81706A for
the type of protection desired..

>From the spec:

1.2 Classification.

1.2.1 Classes. The materials, capable of forming protective coatings
by chemical reaction
with aluminum and aluminum alloys, are of the following classes, as
specified (see 6.2 and 6.3).

Class 1A - For maximum protection against corrosion, painted or
unpainted.
Class 3 - For protection against corrosion where low electrical
resistance is required.

We would be using alodine as a Class 1A material, I believe.

The complete spec can be found at:

http://assist.daps.dla.mil/docimages/0003/11/52/81706A.PD3

My pens are in transit so I don't know what info comes with them,
but here are some links that may be interesting:

http://www.loctiteaero.com/Images/Datasheet_PDF/hst_alodine1201.pdf
(technical process buliten for 1201)

http://www.loctiteaero.com/Images/Datasheet_PDF/hst_touchnprep.pdf
(technical process buliten for 1132)

There is a 3rd form of alodine, 1200S, which is a powder form of
alodine that is diluted in water to make a liquid. It is much less
expensive (and easier to ship) than 1201 and is equivalent when
mixed in the proper ratio. This is what I will use next time I have
to order some (along with the pens).

http://www.loctiteaero.com/Images/Datasheet_PDF/hst_alodine1200s.pdf
(technical process buliten for 1200S)

I am in the process of deciding whether to alodine the tank
components to provide a little better corrosion protection. I need
to research whether pro-seal adheres properly to alodined surfaces.

Good luck,

Paul Trotter

<SNIP>Let us know...because my alodine pen is in transit. I plan on
using it this weekend.<SNIP>

FWIW, my brother-in-law offered to get me one of them pens. He says
they use them in c-sinks all the time at the "majors" before
riveting their repairs; however, he told me it probably would not be
needed in my project (emp/wings) other than in the spar c-sinks. He
said to shoot some primer from the NAPA can on the spar c-sinks
before final assembly and call it good to go. Not as neat a job as
the pen would do but just as good.

Jose.
