There's been previous discussion regarding landing lights. I know
the Duckworks lights perform well. However, I would like to know if
anyone has installed and flown with wingtip lights such as
CreativeAir (VonDane), RMD or any other wingtip lights. I know
there is some obstruction from the strobe/position light, but has
that become an "issue" in actual flying? Anyone have experience
with this?
Thanks for replies,
Sam

I have the creativeair wing tip landing lights. Two nights ago I
waited till after dark to see how they worked on the taxi strip.
With my tail dragger I have them aimed down so they light the strip
with the tail on the ground. This allowed me to cant up the strobe
at a slight angle when I installed it. The net result is the lights
are not affected by the strobe and they work well to light the taxi
strip. Haven't landed with them yet however.

I have a tip for those using the Duckworks system. Locate the lamp assembly
OUTBOARD of the hole in the leading edge. Basically what I'm saying is
don't try to center the lamp assembly up with the hole. That's what the kit
sort of has you do implicitly by how it's cut, and that's what I did.
The problem with centering the lamp with the hole is that while you get
great *directly forward* illumination, it doesn't shine inboard very much.
What I've seen on older planes where you had to cut your own metal (wow!)
was locating the lamp a little outboard, say 1" or so, so that the lamp has
more illumination toward the centerline.
It's a modification I plan on doing one of these days.
Sorry to be a little off-topic, but I figured it was relevant enough to
babble about it.

Sam, amazing that you brought this up at this time as I am in the
process of modifying Van's RV-10 wingtip light kit for my RV-7A. I
will let you all know how it goes, good or bad. BTW Van's sells the
kit for both wingtips for $95 vs $120 for both tips using the
creativair lights. Like a lot of people, I just hate cutting into a
perfectly smooth leading edge to mount landing lights, something
that is next to worthless weight in the first place.

Rich,
I will be most interested in your outcome with the RV10 lights.
Maybe some pictures when you're done?

Dan,
Thanks for the tip. I mounted mine some time ago (not flying yet) and I am
pretty sure they were mounted in the middle of the hole. Let us know how
the mod works and any hindsight suggestions on how to do the mod would be
appreciated too.

Just a thought here about beam aiming. I respect anyones desire to
aim the landing light to suit their purpose. In Alaska, we have six
months of dark flying and I get a lot of flying in the dark
sometimes into small strips without even runway lights.I have found
that by aiming my lights to the side just slightly I have better
depth perception for flare out. The area just ahead of the nose is
ignored and I look at the end of the runway to keep straightly
aligned. My peripheral vision is aided by the increased lighting to
the sides. In some cases I need to modify my scan if the only
runway lighting is a lamp sitting out in mid runway. Just another
thing to consider for you. Personal preferences certainly rule!

I totally agree that peripheral is where it's at. My main concern is that
I'll hit a rabbit or deer or something one of these nights if I can't see
directly in front of me. I can see straight ahead "just fine," but I want
to see straight ahead "amazingly." 8^) Knowhaddamean?
To date, about 15% of my flying has been at night (243 hours of night flight
and 358 night landings). But in the RV-7, only 5% has been at night so
far...that's mostly because for the first 100 hours or so, I didn't want to
do too much night flying in the "new" plane. Now my comfort level is much,
much higher, and the trend is that I'm flying at night more often -- almost
at my usual pace.
In the Mooney, that crappy GE landing light up front would blow all too
often (for see-and-be-seen I run my landing lights constantly no matter day
or night, wig-wag in this plane). But when that cowl-mounted landing light
in the Mooney was operating, I was happy with the illumination level. Now
with the dual 100W halogen landing lights in the wings, I have an excellent
"field" of illumination...much better than the Mooney in terms of the
spread. But I don't have that wonderful straight ahead illumination that
I'd like.
Complicating things is the fact that I'm flying a taildragger. My left
light is set up for tail-down attitude, and my right light is set up for
tail-up attitude. I always wheel land, and I especially prefer to wheel
land at night -- to maintain the most forward visibility during touchdown.
What ends up happening is that as I touch down, the right light is doing the
work, and then as I transition the tail down the left light takes over --
but the right light ends up pointing up into the air. It's not
ideal...because at any given moment, I'm really only benefitting from one
light.
On one hand, I'm tempted to switch to all 3-point landings at night and aim
both lights low. That way I can take advantage of both lights while landing
& taxiing. That would make a lot of sense in some ways. You guys with
nosewheels have it easier in this department. But I really do prefer to
wheel land and keep that forward visibility at night.
Oh well. You can't have it all. I intend to dial these lights in better
and better over time. Or maybe I'll tweak my technique. I know one RV-6
driver who has *3* landing lights cut into his wings. Two on the left, one
on the right. That would kick butt, but I think it's a little excessive for
such a small percentage of the time.
Anyway, just my latest brain dump on the subject. Hope this helps in some
way.

Dan,
Have you ever thought of putting that third light in the left nav light
spot?

I totally agree that peripheral is where it's at. My main concern is that
I'll hit a rabbit or deer or something one of these nights if I can't see
directly in front of me. I can see straight ahead "just fine," but I want
to see straight ahead "amazingly." 8^) Knowhaddamean?
To date, about 15% of my flying has been at night (243 hours of night
flight
and 358 night landings). But in the RV-7, only 5% has been at night so
far...that's mostly because for the first 100 hours or so, I didn't want
to
do too much night flying in the "new" plane. Now my comfort level is
much,
much higher, and the trend is that I'm flying at night more often --
almost
at my usual pace.
In the Mooney, that crappy GE landing light up front would blow all too
often (for see-and-be-seen I run my landing lights constantly no matter
day
or night, wig-wag in this plane). But when that cowl-mounted landing
light
in the Mooney was operating, I was happy with the illumination level. Now
with the dual 100W halogen landing lights in the wings, I have an
excellent
"field" of illumination...much better than the Mooney in terms of the
spread. But I don't have that wonderful straight ahead illumination that
I'd like.
Complicating things is the fact that I'm flying a taildragger. My left
light is set up for tail-down attitude, and my right light is set up for
tail-up attitude. I always wheel land, and I especially prefer to wheel
land at night -- to maintain the most forward visibility during touchdown.
What ends up happening is that as I touch down, the right light is doing
the
work, and then as I transition the tail down the left light takes over --
but the right light ends up pointing up into the air. It's not
ideal...because at any given moment, I'm really only benefitting from one
light.
On one hand, I'm tempted to switch to all 3-point landings at night and
aim
both lights low. That way I can take advantage of both lights while
landing
Two on the left,
one
on the right. That would kick butt, but I think it's a little excessive
for
such a small percentage of the time.
Anyway, just my latest brain dump on the subject. Hope this helps in some
way.

Sorry I haven't responded yet -- was over at Copperstate. Man, it was good
meeting all the builders out there. Hope to see more 7and7As at the next
one. Darwin, I could only make it halfway through that monstrous bag...you
call that medium?! Brought the 2nd half back for Jen and we scarfed it down
while catching up on the debate and SNL's version of it... 8^)
Ok, back to lights. I hadn't thought about that. Interesting idea. One
limiting factor is my 40-amp alternator. With both 100W lamps on solid,
fuel pump (I need the power hog one for my FI), strobe lights, and position
lights, and panel lights on about 1/2 to 3/4 dim, I'm right there at about
39 amps or so. Adding another light would probably mean moving up to the
60A alternator.
You may see a used B&C 40A alternator come up for sale on this list at some
point, but it probably won't be for a while.
Cool idea, though, to add redundancy via something like a Vondane wingtip
landing light kit. I appreciate the tip!

Dan,
How long do you run all of that stuff? Unless you're running it all the time, there is no reason you can't rob a few electrons from the battery once you're on final, then turn the extra lights off once you're on the ground. I don't think 30 seconds of running a deficit is a problem. Once you're on the ground, turn off the *extra* stuff, and the battery will be back to full charge by the time you taxi back to the hangar..

I don't run all that stuff that long, maybe a minute or two, and then I'm on
the ground with the fuel pump off, etc. If it were a deficit coming from
the battery, I wouldn't be that concerned. It's that my ammeter goes up to
about 42+ amps when I have everything running solid (including pitot heat).
It appears, and I've been told by B&C, that the "40 amp" thing isn't a hard
limit per se, that the alternator will put out whatever is being demanded of
it (within reason).
So it's not really the battery that's being taxed, it's the alternator
(unless I misunderstand something conceptual here, which is certainly
possible). I'd be more comfortable taxing a battery than I am when I demand
too much from my alternator.
There's also the possibility that the hall effect sensor for the amps
reading on my monitor could be off...although it did come pre-calibrated
from the factory, so I doubt it.

time, there is no reason you can't rob a few electrons from the battery once
you're on final, then turn the extra lights off once you're on the ground.
I don't think 30 seconds of running a deficit is a problem. Once you're on
the ground, turn off the *extra* stuff, and the battery will be back to full
charge by the time you taxi back to the hangar..
