You don't need to rinse after using the alodine pen, per the data
sheet.

Below are links to the data sheets for 3 common versions of alodine:

My pens are in transit as well, and I expect to try them shortly.

Right, thta was also mentioned in the Boeing article that someone
posted here last week. That fact is what piqued my interest, here's
why.

Back when I first thought priming was a REALLY big deal (rather than
kind of a big deal, followed by no big deal), I bought AlumiPrep and
Alodine. For some of the empennage, I dutifully set about cleaning,
alumiprepping, Alodining and then priming, usually with a rattle can.

In short, major pain in the neck.

Eventually, I decided to go with the two-part SW primer once I
started on the wings because the rattle cans didn't seem efficient.
Of course, that's when I intended to prime everything. SW and Alodine
don't get along, so the bottle was relegated to the top of the shelf.

Eventually, the SWing got to be a pain in the neck too. Alumiprep,
clean everything, set up the spray gun and prep the garage for
painting.

And then a month or so ago there was a thread on -- and go figure --
priming here on the list and Dan Checkoway and a couple of other
folks pointed out the tradeoff of fun for weight and all of a sudden
it made much more sense to just prime -- or at least alodine -- small
parts of big things instead of all the big things
and...subsequently...the Alodine pen made its appearance.

But....

still sitting forlornly on the shelf is that massively expensive
(when you add in the ridiculous UPS shipping charges) bottle of
Alodine 1200.

When the pen specs came along, I said, "hey, if you don't have to
wash off the pen, maybe you don't REALLY have to wash off the Alodine
1200, in which case, it'd be a lot easier to take that stuff, poor it
in a little cup and use a small 1" paintbrush to Alodine small
sections of big pieces.

I wouldn't do it if I had to wash it off because, well, it's a total
pain in the neck to dispose of the stuff and to prepare the area for
washing it off. Pretty much the same scenario the Boeing folks
described in that article for why they've embraced the pen so much.

I could, I suppose, just take that bottle of Alodine 1200 to the
local hazardous waste collection site, cuz I'm not going back to all
the nonsense necessary to include it in the priming process as it was
originally described, and yet I'd hate to throw out a perfectly good
bottle if it coudl be integrated into a simpler process.

In other words, it comes down to being cheap.

"In other words, it comes down to being cheap."

Bob

I prefer "it comes down down to being resonable". However cheaper means
less time, and time is always running out. Let's keep pounding, get some
air under the tires sooner rather than later and start chasing the likes of
Dan C in the air, lest he get bored and start building again.
