A while back I was a bit hasty in responding to a thread on the
value of CS props over fixed pitch. With the great performance I was
getting in my RV-8 with fixed pitch I made a hasty comment that a CS
prop was a waste of money. So, to Roberta and the rest of you CS
people I apologize. I am actually considering putting a CS prop on
my RV-7A now that I've heard so much about aft CG problems with the
RV-7's here in this group. It would at least help correct that
problem although at great expense. I still don't think it is
necessary performance-wise unless you need high density altitude
performance or shorter field take offs. The RV's perform so well
even with the fixed pitch under normal conditions.

Rich,
I understand that many like the constant speed prop for the breaking in the

I just added a 24.5 lb brass prop spacer from Sabre Manufacturing to
my RV7 with sensenich and 0-360. It moved my cg an inch forward and
allows me to pack 90 lbs safely in the baggage area with me and my
wife on board.

Oh, I forgot to mention the best part about this heavy prop spacer,
before I had a vibration at 2500 rpm and now it is gone. The engine
is smooth at all RPMs... very nice!

Rich,
Certainly... (sounding like Curley of the stooges).
The RV, regardless of model, is an aircraft that does not decelerate as
readily as most GA aircraft...this can be a pain when you are descending
into a traffic pattern from altitudes that RV's can easily attain.
Throttling back and flattening the CS prop increases drag significantly and
results in fairly dramatic braking action, kinda like engine braking after
shifting into a lower gear in a car.
Of course one can decelerate just fine with a fixed pitch prop... you just
lack the extra braking force the flattened CS prop gives.

Thanks for the clarification Steve, when you said "breaking " I was
unsure what you meant but "braking" certainly rings bells with me.
Yes, I have noticed in my RV-8 that it is hard to slow down on
final, but full flaps and idle provide sufficient descent angle for
my needs. People who need steeper angles can certainly benefit from
the braking effects as you mention. Having flown FedEx Caravans I
really appreciated the braking affect of a flat pitch prop as it has
an exaggerated effect in that plane. You can literally put a
Caravan "on its nose" on final.

I think we all tend to get upity or defensive or whatever. As long as we don't get "in your face" offensive, a little bantering can be fun and enlightening. We all have our opinions and methodology and experiences, etc. It's good to field them for others to analyze and use from all to none of the info gleened in this forum. Anyway, no offense taken by me. Get the Hartzell BA 74". It is really GREAT!!!!

Does the spacer require you to modify the cowl?

Rich,
Ah...well spelling was not my strength in school...yes braking...sorry...
I had the chance to fly the Caravan...I was amazed at the way you could back
her down...
I was up with a bunch of RV guys in a Tiger one day, before I took the RV
plunge, and one of the guys in an 8 came roarin' up and flattened his
prop...I was doin' maybe 130...he pulled in beside and just decelerated in a
couple plane lengths...it was impressive.
My building partner had a 7 and had switched to CS after a bit...he loved
it...primarily for the rocket ship climb and braking action...

Please ignore any ignorance. But does this practice cause any stress on the
crank. Especially going from 130 on down. Is there any speeds to be
concerned about like putting on flaps???

Yes Roberta.........I'm just glad that I did not TOUCH your airplane at OSH.
Could've lost a finger or arm, and for good reason!!! But then it would
take me longer to finish my 7, with CS prop. Hope it turns out a nice as
yours. Very impressive work!
PS - I didn't really fall for the 65 gal belly tank, but had to say
something...................
PPS - I'm fairly new to the list but hope you do come back on BC! As you
probably really know, your input is highly regarded. No sympathy, just
welcome back!

I think we all tend to get upity or defensive or whatever. As long as we
don't get "in your face" offensive, a little bantering can be fun and
enlightening. We all have our opinions and methodology and experiences, etc.
It's good to field them for others to analyze and use from all to none of
the info gleened in this forum. Anyway, no offense taken by me. Get the
Hartzell BA 74". It is really GREAT!!!!

Thanks, Bill. I really wouldn't have bitten you very hard. Without knowing anything about all the people admiring our plane, and having a few jerks actually manhandling it, I guess I was a bit on the defensive side. Had I known you, and knew what a real gentleman you are, I would have been more at ease. There were so many nice people like you at the fly in, but those few jerks can really p--s a person off.
Hope to see you at Oshkosh soon with your plane.
Roberta
