I have just purchased an APA sport from proprietary software systems
and was wondering if anyone had any issues with the installation
that I should be aware of.

I also just purchased a GretzAero Pitot bracket for a heated pitot,
but just prior to deciding to install a heated pitot I drilled the
hole in the wing for a standard pitot. I was worried about the hole
so I called Van's and they recommended me just leaving the hole
open. This bothers me, has anyone else just left the standard pitot
hole open in the bottom of their wing?
Thanks in advance for any advise...

I just installed the AOA ports recently... no issues... just remember
to seal 'em as recommended in the instructions.. proseal or rtv
should be fine..

#4 screw dimple dies would be very helpful :) I used 1/8" d.d. set
instead (didn't have #4 screw d.d set) and that seemed to work fine
too.

The hole in the bottom of the wing is a good thing, it serves as a great
angle of attack indicator. When you flare for landing, you will hear a
high-pitched whistle that will warn you the RV is about to thump down on
the runway.

Oh..............phooey............guess that might be construed as
another attempt to Hoax somebody......... :-)

Seriously, unless you plan to keep the tie-down rings in place all the
time, you will already have two holes in the bottom of the wing, another
one isn't going to hurt anything. But if it really bothers you, go to a
plumbing supply place and get a pop-in plug for the hole (same kind as
is used to plug valve access holes in wheelpants).

Mark, I am in the very same situation. Funny you should post at the
same time I was just pondering the same thing. I was to the point
where it did not bother me in the least. Think I am going to just
put a rubber plug in it as someone else suggested once she's painted.
Wont hurt a thing.
I have not purchased the AOA yet but will be soon. I may be posting
questions on installation and would appreciate the help.

Doug,
I would be more than happy to share my experiences with the AOA
probe. One thing I have been told by the manufacturer was to
install the AOA in the opposite wing from the pitot and that
location is critical. The probe comes calibrated so if you follow
their suggested installation location you'll be up and running
almost immediately.

Tomorrow I install my landing lights..

To those people wondering about whether to install AOA:

AOA is an important aid in complex aircraft. If the plane can be put
into many different configuration/CG's, an AOA is the only way
unless you want to memorize a hundred different landing and approach
speeds.

AOA usefulness in a light airplane is up to the pilot for sure. An
RV is pretty simple to land under most all loading configs. And
aispeed works well. If you desire a backup to your airspeed
indicator then you may or may not think it is worthwhile as that.
AOA is also useful to establish a cruise airspeed at varying density
altitudes and CG's. And of course it can be used in aerobatics to
hold that best "cornering airspeed" for you fighter pilots.

AOA is certainly a fun option to add to any plane, if you can afford
it. Hopefully the price will come down in the future.
