I just visited Classic Aero Designs in Albany, OR two weeks ago and
ordered my seats. Although the building was not particularly
impressive, Luke Doughton who runs it was extremely patient and
helpful. I was initially drawn to their seats because they looked
to have more contour on the sides and bottom-more like a sports car
seat. This was true as I sat in a leather one he had there and
found it very comfortable. Of course, it takes 3 hours in the air
to know for sure, but it looks like it should be great. He also was
very open to some custom touches I wanted and offered his opinion on
how they would work. I ended up ordering a synthetic leather that
was much more expensive ($94/yd, my wish), but should wear a long
time without fading or cracking. The seats should be delivered in
early December, so I'll know more then.

I haven't flown with my seats but I will say that they are
very well made and look/feel terrific. I also had some custom
touches applied like gold N-number embroidered onto the
seat back. And they accomodate the ball-buster 5pt harness.

I purchased leather seats from Classic Aero Designs for my RV-7 and I am
100% satisfied with their appearance and workmanship. I am still
building, though--so I can't say how they hold up comfort-wise on a long
cross country. They seem very comfortable on the imaginary flights my
son and I have made in my two-car garage.

I was also impressed by their seats and side panels. I would use them if the need for new seats and interior parts comes up.

For those who have the Van's seat cushion cores. I have found them to be very comfy on long flights. I have done several long cross countries with 2.5 to 3.5 hour legs. I suffered no pains or ill effects and the seats seem to be holding up well with all the climbing in and out. I had a local aircraft upholsterer do the covers in a Buick velour. I used the extra seat piece (the 1" thick part) on the top of the thicker core, but found I did not need the wedges. I used a 3/4" piece of ACS's sound proofing foam under the carpet instead. That gave Rich and I the correct height.

Hope this helps anyone who has the Van's seats.

They're great on both imaginary and real flights. I'll hit 250 hours on
my -7 this week. As far as spending long durations in the Classic Aero
seats, Jen and I took it from LA across the country and up to eastern
Canada. I think the longest single leg I've flown is probably about 4
hours, but after 3 hours bladder and growling stomach are usually the
factors -- never comfort per se. On the big trip we had some days where we
were flying pretty much all day long (i.e. SoCal to Minneapolis & Boston to
Pierre, SD).

The Classic Aero Designs seats have worked for me so far.

And I gotta say that after being totally abused by people who haven't
listened to what I said in my briefing about "step on the seat HERE, NOT
here," (I have passengers step on the darker patch in the center, but
invariably they step on the thigh areas -- people get excited and forget
what you told 'em) the seats have held up way better than I thought they
might. Soft fabric was my concern. But there really aren't any signs of
wear at all. I'm a little surprised, to be honest. I didn't like the
"rough" feel of any of the other vendors' swatches (irritated skin on a long
trip is a no-no), and when I got the nice smooth soft swatches from Classic
Aero and saw their contoured seat design, I was sold.

I think these seats are gonna last me a long time. I'm not affiliated with
Classic Aero...just have their seats and am happy with 'em.

The one piece of advice I have, and I'm not sure if this is even still
relevant, is to give yourself AMPLE time when you order from them. I don't
remember exactly, but I think it took around 6-8 weeks to get my seats, and
it was right down to the wire where I was ready to fly and didn't get 'em
til the last minute. I didn't order soon enough to have my seat cushions
for first engine start & taxi tests and stuff. My fault for not ordering
earlier, but it is a relatively slow process. Ask Luke for an honest
assessment of how much lead time he needs so your expectations are
realistic.

Hope this helps,

Dan,

Are your seats covered with the cloth or vinyl?

I don't think yours are the leather which may be a little "slippery" and show the foot wear more than the cloth.

Cloth. I'm not a big fan of leather or vinyl. I'm not knocking it, it
definitely looks gorgeous. Just had it in previous planes and it makes my
butt sweat (ew). 8^)
