Author: Frank Stringham <fstringham7a@...> Time: Fri Oct 8, 2004 9:33 am PDT Link

Hi to all

My slow build wing kit will be here first week of November. Besides pitot consideration, lights, conduit, what other things do I need to be considering. Also any words of wisdom in the area of fabrication both wings / tanks / etc.

Tall order to expect of you experts but you know my blind spots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any help

Frank @ SGU & SLC

Frank,

I am finishing slow build fuel tanks. I built two wing jigs. Some mention that you make twice the mistakes, but I believe it has paid off in tool set up, motivation and ect. For sure after the emp, the drawings and manual need a bit more study. Better order another 200 silver clecos though. One thing that you will realize when you unpack that spar.... I am really building an airplane? Good luck!

Good Luck,

Hi Frank,

I can give you one hint about using proseal when you build your
tanks. Proseal can be frustrating to work with for newcomers. I had
plenty of experience already having built an airplane early on in my
life that was built out of proseal( the infamous BD-5)

Plan every movement you will need to make, and every tool you will
need in advance and have that plan ready to go before you start.

Measure your mix carefully, it really does matter on the long term
results you will get. I use an electronic scale.

Change your gloves often while in the process. A bit of proseal on
your glove rapidly transfers to every thing you touch, and from
there back onto every other thing you touch etc.

Use plenty of sealant to cover the parts but then go back and
selectively remove excess sealant before it dries.

Wipe off proseal on all your tools and clecos before it dries!!!

Use a respirator when cleaning with MEK, it is deadly stuff.

Hope this will help you have a fun time with your tanks!

Rich

Frank,
Use nitrile gloves with MEK and change them often as they will have penetration in under 30 min. Latex will only stand up to MEK for about two min and after that the gloves will pass MEK through very rapidly. Don

On cleaning up after a proseal session – MEK does it of course but I use
Epoxy reducer which you can buy at any auto supply store – it is gentler
than MEK and does the job on proseal just as well. I only use MEK to clean
surfaces prior to applying proseal or ScotchWeld.
