Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: F 704 Double flush rivets

Author: "lindbergs52" <lindbergs1@...> Time: Sat Oct 9, 2004 5:21 am PDT Link

The forwardmost flange of the F 704 bulkhead (the bulkhead the main
spars attach to) has
ten double flush rivets, five to either side. This is to provide a
flat surface for the main
gear weldments. How best to do this? My present plan is to dimple
the F 704 flange
downward, machine countersink the top surface of the center belly
skin (.032) to accept
this dimple, and machine countersink the forward belly skin (.040) to
accept the rivet
head. My reasoning is that the shop head of the double flush rivet
will be easier to form in
a dimple rather than in a machine countersink. Comments? What have
others done?
Thanks, Steve Lindberg.

Steve,

I dimpled the forward skin, the center skin, and the flange so the
rivet would be flush with the outside of the fuselage. I didn't
put the rivet in from the ourside however and countersunk the inside
of the fuselage to accept the manufactured head of the rivet, ie.,
the shop head would be in the dimple (on the ourside). Worked fine,
looks good.

Jerry.
