Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Fluting Ribs

Author: "Greg Larson" <hanzonn@...> Time: Sat Oct 9, 2004 1:40 pm PDT Link

Greetings,

I think I'm missing something here. Pg. 6-2 of the manual talks
about fluting HS 404, 405, 706, & 707. It also refers to section 5N
(fluting), which states "fluting diagrams for the empennage, wing
ribs and bulkheads are shown on the plans where required." I can't
find any diagrams or notes showing which ribs are required to be
fluted. I already clecoed the left skin without fluting and it seems
to fit pretty well, so is it necessary or not?

Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg,

All ribs that are not perfectly straight need fluting. The
difference is that most ribs have the holes pre-punched in the
flange so you know where to flute (in between the holes), whereas
other ribs do not have the pre-punched holes so you need to refer to
a diagram to see where they will be. Then mark their location and
flute in between again.

Fluting straightens out the web of the rib so the holes are lined up and the rib is flat. So require fluting more than others. Flute so your rivet is not in the dent made by the fluting pliers and the rivet contact are is nice and flat.

Hope this helps,

Roberta

Greg: It is necessary. Formed parts with curved bends (ie:ribs) require fluting to
straighten. It is possible to force the parts together without fluting but the fit will not be
good and stress will be built into the structure which could lead to cracking around the
rivet heads. Use your flanging pliers to adjust the flange to the proper angle, usually 90
degreees. Flute between the rivet holes to "shrink" the flange so that the part lays flat on
your table top. It will not require deep flutes to make it flat. Make small flutes at first and
spread them out along the flange. If you do too much you can undo the flutes by
squeezing them with the flanging pliers. I sight down the part to check straightness.
After you spend a few hours doing this you will be a pro. Good luck, Steve.

Yea Greg, I think flutting is required. Pretty good and good are two different things. Perfect is not required. The reference to the diagrams is a hold over from when there were no prepunched holes, they were trying to keep you from fluting where a hole would be drilled.... just flute between the prepunched holes and you are good. Before fluting tho, be sure your flanges are at 90 degree angles to the web, then flute to get the ribs straight as they lay on the table. When you are done fluting, the flanges will again be off the 90 degree angle, just readjust a few times and all will be well. Takes practice. When I started it was a 30 minute deal per rib, now I expect it would take 3 minutes tops. Of course I've been working on this $&#*^ thing for three years. "I'm getin bet-r tho"

Hope this helps, Larry

...and if you're fluting a rib that's NOT pre-punched (HS-404 and HS-405,
for instance), make sure you don't skip the step in the instructions
where it says to mark the hole locations using the skin as a guide.

Yes fluting is required. As below, flanges need to be at 90 deg to web,
flute very lightly, using a hand seamer to gently squeeze if you go too far.
The idea here is to be able to lay a straight edge along the holes & have
them line up, as the skin holes they are attached to are lined up. May not
be so noticeable in some areas, but is a must do!
