Murphy and I were dimpling the firewall this morning and despite
written warnings posted on the firewall, print hanging on the wall
next to the work table and every other precaution taken, we, (I)
dimpled about 50% of the firewall from the wrong side (flush on aft
side).

If I reverse the exsisting dimples, which seems possible as evidenced
by a few that I have smacked back to the way they are supposed to be,
what would be the likelyhood of the material work hardening so as to
result in a bunch of cracking at these "double dimpled" holes soon
after the flying begins?

Or would it just be better to start over with a new firewall?

Thanks for your thoughts,

I would talk with Van's before proceding .Some materials can take
repeat dimples and others cannot. They will be able to advise you.

Something as important as the FW? I'd replace it. Trying to repair it later would be more work and expense than it would now.

Steven: I don't know the answer, but here is what I would do. I'd push the dimples back
the right way and look at them with a 10x magnifying glass. No cracks? I'd use the
firewall. BTW, I put my firewall together with tank sealant. It will (I hope) keep unpleasant
liquids and smells out of the cabin....and it also might reduce stress at the rivet heads and
forestall cracks. My opinion? You are OK. If Murph is still hanging around your shop slap
him around for the rest of us. Steve

Steven, Murphy and I are good buddy's. Anyway, I'd re re-dimple them in the correct way, then I'd ask an A&P or Van's for their opinion.

Steven,

I know what your talking about here. After very carful attention to
which way my firewall was facing I some how had the dies in the c-
frame upside down. (I think Murphy switched mine without asking too)

I started whacking away when on about the 10th hole I saw what I was
doing wrong. (Maybe Murphy felt bad) I changed the dies and reversed
the offending rivets then marked them with a sharpie and finished
dimpling the firewall. I too was worried about cracks so I inspected
the marked dimples with a little old radio shack 30X iluminated
mircoscope. No cracks, in fact they looked as good as or better than
the the "correct" dimples. I knew that Vans said it was ok
to "reverse" a dimple in aluminum once (don't ask). However I wasn't
sure about stainless. So I fired them an e-mail. I was told no
problem on reversing a dimple in the firewall once.

BTW have you ever inspected a dimpled or regular hole with a 30X
microscope? Holy cow! those smooth, shinny looking deburred holes
are FAR from smooth! I have two deburring tools, one is a single
hole type the other is a three bladed job. The single hole type
produces a MUCH cleaner edge by far!

-I wrote Van's and received an e-mail from Ken Scott saying not to
sweat it, so I am moving on!

Thanks to all that replied.
