Hello Group,
In regards to power plants, it doesn't matter what you have, any and all engines can and will fail. Saying you have a Lyc., or Chevy, or Rotax, or what ever does not necessarily give you any assurances that it will be better or worse than any other.
The biggest thing is what are the performance parameters you expect and can the operational parameters be engineered to meet those of performance. I can tell you that we do not build the same Chevy Small Block for drag racing as we do for circle track. By the same token we do not use a "Box Stock" 4.3 Vortec for aviation.
Just as there are many variations in the Lycoming profile, so is there in the Vortec. As an example, Chevrolet uses 6 different cams and 2 head variations under the same "Goodwrench" part number. Even though their advertised power and torque are roughly the same, performance figures vary dramatically.
Bottom line, there are advantages and disadvantages to auto conversions just as there are for "aircraft designed" installations. Because of our performance and operational requirements the 4.3 better suits our needs for our RV.
