I had to chuckle at some of the responses to my post last week.

Guys, if an airframe does not break at 8100 pounds (aerobatic
category weight 1350 X 6Gs) it is not going to break at 7800 pounds
(utility category weight 1950 X 4Gs). That's not engineering.
That's just common sense.

As for liability concerns... the only way you can put 6gs on an
airframe without aerobatics is to do something really stupid.
Frankly, I'm not too worried about where the FAA will assign the
blame if some future owner loads my plane to 1950 and then flys it
into a thunderstorm.

The overwhelming majority of airframe failures are caused by
aerobatics, and I have a simple solution to that liability risk. You
may not be aware of this, but if you want a legally aerobatic
aircraft, then you the builder must personally sign off during Phase
I testing each and every aerobatic manuver that you have tested and
approved the airplane to perform. My plane has seen 6 Gs. It has
been flutter tested to 210 MPH (by a much better and braver pilot
than me). But it has never been signed off for aerobatic flight.
And since I am the only person who can ever do that, I guarantee that
it never will be.

Jon.

I think you'll find the center of mass changes as we add weight to our
RV's. When the 'Center of Mass' changes position I would think the
airframe would be stressed differently. With that said, I would not
agree that it is 'Just Common Sense'
