Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: PAINT GUNS

Author: "Hicks" <hicksco@...> Time: Sun Jul 3, 2005 1:00 am PDT Link

Hello everyone,
I have a question about paint guns.
I have almost zero knowledge of painting, outside of rattle cans.

I understand HVLP is the way to go.
However, there are two kinds of HVLP guns .....'Gravity feed', and 'Siphon feed'.

My question is basicly this, if you could buy only one gun for both priming and painting, which type would you buy ...Gravity feed or Siphon feed? ....Why?

Thanks,
Carson

Carson,

I'm no expert either and I'm still looking for the
perfect gun. I just don't want you to make the same
mistake I made. I went out and bought an expensive
Home Depot HVLP gun and found out later that my air
compressor didn't have the SCFM to use it. Make sure
whatever you buy can be used with you AC.

Andy

I found that either expensive guns or cheap guns will work a cheap compressor to death. Thus if you decide to prime and paint your plane I would start with the compressor and then decide on the gun. Talk to your local auto body people or if you have an airplane paint shop near you to get info as to the best compressor / gun combos and work from there. I now use a Sata RP Digital with my CHEAP Home Depot compressor. It shoot a great prime job BUT...........I know if I am to paint the plane I will have to invest in a much better compressor. Kinda like deciding to move up from the cheap hammer / dimpler tool from Avery's to the Experimant Aero DRDT-2. The DRDT-2 is way more expensive but it is so easy to use and makes the best dimples.................You only get what you pay for.
