Author: Mark Lancaster <mlancast2004@...> Time: Sun Jul 3, 2005 1:01 am PDT Link

Group,

I am working on my 1st wing and have completed all steps in preparation for riveting on the leading edge and top skins (bottoms skins as well). I have completed all the steps to fit the tank to the spar and leading edge - joint plate (it has been fit and drilled in other words). I would like to put off sealing and riveting the tank together until later - in fact the last thing on this wing. Have any other builders riveted the top skins and leading edge to the spar and skeleton before completeing the tank. This is not the progression as presented in the builders manual. I would like to free up some clecoes and set everything in place while everything is well aligned. Anyone see any problems with this plan?

Mark,

I did just as you propose and have just finished sealing the first tank (no
leaks, yippee!). I found working on the Leading Edge in the cradle first
was good practice for the tank, as the work is similar, just not as sticky.

Another reason I delayed my tank was weather. I needed good ventilation and
warm garage.

That's what I am doing. Leading edge and top skins are riveted in place.
Now working on sealing the tanks. Then will remove from fixtures and attach
flaps, ailerons, controls, wiring conduit, etc. Store wings in cradle while
working on QB Fuselage; engine, avionics, etc. I plan on fitting the wings
to fuselage, removing, and lastly, riveting the bottom skins. (Just in case
I forget something that goes in the wing!)

That's my current plan anyway.

Mark

I have QB tanks, but from your comments I assume the splice plate step is done prior to riveting the tanks. Once the spar to tank & tank to splice plate holes are located, the next step is to remove & clean up all, rivet & install the leading edge. On page 7-9 under 'Installing the leading edge', it does state that the tank be installed before the top skins are clecoed in place. The same statement is made first thing on that same page under 'riveting the top skins'. From what I am seeing the tank needs to be in place for spar alignment (?) prior to finishing the top skins. Certainly your call but, IMHO, purchase more clecos & finish the tank first.
