Hi All,
Does anyone know if a Continental IO-360-C will fit in an RV-7? Any
modification required?
Thanks in advance for your help,

I think we can readily say "Yes, modifications will be required,"
without studying up on the details!
Is it a bed mount engine? What does it weigh? What are its
dimensions? Where is its induction air inlet?
Regards,
Martin

I'm pretty sure you would have to build your own motor mount. The cowling also may need to be different. Talk to Vans.

Mark,
Of course anything can be done, your talking about extensive cowl and engine mount mods at the least. You will find better performance and less expense sticking with a Lycoming...

The Continental is a six cylinder and a different motor mount than a
Lycoming.
Van's cowl wouldn't fit. I would suspect the Cont. would be heavier.
But then again these are Experimental, so no reason it wouldn't fly.
Just some customization. I would study CG issues before I got too
far into the process.

Mark,
I would be interested in seeing the Continental IO-360 in an RV. I own
a Globe Swift, and in February I converted it from a Lycoming O-320 (w/
CS Hartzell) to the IO-360. I added approx 35# to the empty weight of
my plane but the performance improvement is significant (obviously, 150
to 210hp). You could recoup some of that weight gain with the MT two-
blade composite prop (MT has done vibration analysis with the
Continental IO-360) versus using the McCauley or Hartzell props.
It is longer by 3 inches, or so (that's just a guess) and you'll also
notice that the thrustline sits a couple of inches higher. I used the
same fiberglass cowling that I previously had, and it required quite a
bit of fiberglass modification...roughly 3" added to the bottom and
1/2" added to the top in order to both lengthen and "lift" it so the
spinner lined up. Another mounting issue, is that the Cont IO-360 is,
for lack of a better term, in a bed-type mount. It is cradled from
beneath rather than mounted from behind like a Dynafocal-style mount.
My installation is the IO-360-G2B (minor accessory difference), but
most all the models (-A, -C, -D, -G) are similar. These are
increasingly hard to find (Swifters snatch them up quickly) since they
are pretty much only on the Skymasters. You might also consider the IO-
360-ES that is installed on the SR-20 Cirrus. It is limited to 2700rpm
and delivers 200hp. These are easier to find plus they are newer
cores, if you're into buying a slightly used engine.
I have lots of pics of my firewall forward installation, if you would
like them emailed to you. Just let me know!
I've flown a lot of Swifts with 180hp and 210hp, and most every time,
the Continental six-banger is smoother than the Lycoming four-banger.
I have flown some really smooth Lycoming 180's, but the Continental has
been consistently more smooth. I think it would make a cool project
for a -7!

Mark,
Oh yeah, I forgot to add...Continentals with those 3-into-1 exhaust
(no muffler) sound like an idling Harley! Those Lycomings run more
like a John Deere!
Lastly, I think you could keep the weight in line with that of a
Lycoming IO-360 if you avoided the Hartzell or McCauley prop. The CG
wouldn't be that bad, plus the cowl work is not that large of an
obstacle if you're reasonably skilled in fiberglass work. You can't
tell that my cowl had ever been modified.

Hi Sam,
Thanks for the information, that is very interesting (about the
smooth running of the Cont. as opposed to the Lyc.). I have heard
similar things, but hadn't seen the subject broached in aby of the
forums. I'm a ways off of engine installation (a long way, like
emp.) but I'm keeping my eyes out for mid-time engines just like
many folk.
I would like to see pic's of your installation if you wouldn't mind
emailing a couple to mchamberlain (at) runbox -dot- com.
Thanks,
Mark
