Author: Mark Lancaster <mlancast2004@...> Time: Sun Jul 3, 2005 1:01 am PDT Link

Group,

Can anyone direct me to images of the VonDane CreativAir Halogen Landing Light Kit installed in RV-7 wing tips? I'm trying to make a decision between this setup and the duckworks landing light setup? If I go with the CreativAir setup, I intend to put the landing light, position light and strobe in the leading edge tip. I like the idea of not cutting into the leading edge. Anyone experience any big challenges with installation of the CreativAir setup? Any testimonials or regrets?

Hi Mark,

I've got a few pictures, but mainly of preparing the LED
position light kit.

I'm not planning on using the landing lights to actually help
me land on a dark airfield at night, but mainly to help my
aircraft be more visible. I'm also installing a "wig-wag".

There's a discussion in the VAF forums about whether non-certificated
lights are OK to use on homebuilts. I understand that the airplane
itself need not comply with Part 23, but that does not mean that the
same can be said for the installed equipment. Specifically, when Part
91 (which does, of course, apply to homebuilts) refers to an "approved"
position light system or an "approved" anticollision light system, what
do we think they mean? Don't they mean "compliant with Part 23?"

Part 23 has all sorts of rules about viewing angles and intensity and
even specific definitions of what green and red color mean. Do the LED
lights people install in homebuilts meet these requirements? Are there
test results or analysis to show that? (whether or not they meet the
FAA's standards, I'd like to see proof that my airplane will be as
visible as one equipped with Part 23-compliant lights.)

I put the LED lights in my wing tips. I bought my project underway and the Duckworks were already in the wings. If I were starting from your position, I'd go wing tip set up all the way.

I haven't figured out why we don't see more LED position lights. They are easy to do, have very long life span, don't require any special wiring and are VERY bright. Oh yeah, much less than conventional lights.

Darwin,

FWIW, I definitely would have gone with LED position lights had they been
available at the time I decided how to equip my plane. I may decide to swap
out my incandescent setup at some point in the future. My 40A alternator is
enough to handle my system's load, but I would like to buy myself even more
headroom. Converting to LED position lights would be one easy way to do
that.

I haven't used LED position lights yet or even seen 'em in person -- and
thus can't vouch for how effective they are, but they do seem promising, and
I'm sold on the concept.

Just my 2 cents.

As additional info, I actually melted a sag in my clear light cover with
the standard (red) incandescent position lamp. Now I leave them off
until rolling, for better cooling.

I just posted a couple pictures of my lights. I was very impressed with them on the web
site but wanted to see them in person, installed, before I bought them. I saw a pair at
Van's Homecoming last year and they looked great and got good feedback from the owner
(Amit from Portland, thanks!). I'm not flying yet, but I'm more psyched about these than
anything else I've put on the plane to date. I bought my strobe pack from Strobes N More.
They are the same setup Creativeair is using (as best I can tell) and cost a lot less. There is
plenty of clearance above the strobe for the landing light, which I was concerned about.

CreativeAir did a great job with the LED/landing light setup. They boards come square
with an outline for the RV7/8 sheared wingtip. I was conservative about trimming the first
one, but the line was perfect and I cut straight to that on the second board.
