Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: training edge & Horn brace

Author: "Andy Bell" <bellwa99@...> Time: Mon Jul 4, 2005 5:00 pm PDT Link

Did anyone else have trouble countersinking the trailing edge wedge.
Most came out ok, but a few are a little too deep and a few are ragged
and one is elongated. The holes look pretty big after countersinking
both side. I'm torn between ordering another and just going with it.
Sometimes I'm a little too much of a perfectionist. What do you think.
Too anal?

In addition, I dimpled the R-710 Horn brace where the skins attach.
This piece looks pretty thick and I'm thinking it should have been
machine countersunk. It doesn't say anything in the plans either way
other than general guidance on dimpling/countersinking based on metal
thickness. Anyone else dimple this piece?

Happy Independance Day everyone and thanks for any comments in advance.

Andy,

Did you use a microstop for the countersink and a drill press? Both help
tremendously in keeping the holes consistent. You also need to keep the
edge that you're countersinking level. Without seeing your results, it's
hard to say press on or make that call to Van's for another piece. FYI,
when gluing the trailing edge, I used JB Weld.... don't think I would use it
again as pieces cracked when I riveted. Maybe use proseal instead.

Re: R-710, I dimpled as well - came out perfect!

Go with it. It's just a spacer and you are going to have oversized holes because of the thickness (thinness). The Proseal or whatever you use will fill the holes anyway. As for the horn brace, if a rivet fully set's in the dimple, your a go. I dimple everything .040 and under that I can, I c'sink over .040.

Andy,

I had the same problem. I blew out two holes enough
where there was a slight shake to the rivet. After
that, I backed of the countersink and moved it one
notch at a time and countersunk both sides till I was
satisfied. I found that the countersink is just a tad
shallow on both sides. Anymore, and the hole would
have been wallowed out. I dimpled the skin normally
and clecoed the lot together. All looked good. I did
not use proseal on the TE wedge as I made a jig to
hold the TE straight. Riveting was a two step
process. I squeezed the rivets as far I could, then
back riveted them to final set. Outside of a very
small scallop in the shop head side skin, the TE looks
good. Only about .020" wow in the TE.

I dimpled R-710 without any problems. I opted for the
blind pulled rivets and I am quite satisfied.
