Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Fitting the F-779 aft bottom skin?

Author: "Merems" <merems@...> Time: Mon Jul 4, 2005 7:11 pm PDT Link

Fellow RV-7 builders,

I need some help. I am trying to fit my F-779 bottom skin and I am having a bit of trouble. This is the 0.040 thick bottom skin that ties the last three bulkheads together. My original skin didn't fit well. I tried to bend it by hand, clamped it between wood blocks and put some muscle into it, but without much success. I thought it might have been improperly formed at the factory so I ordered an new one. Well this one is about as bad as the original. Once again I tried to bend without success.

I may not be the strongest builder but maybe one of you have a great idea for me to try before I break my wrists trying to muscle this skin.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

This has always been a difficult piece to fit. I made some additional
bends with a box & pan brake to get it to fit.

Ah yes, the infamous bottom tail cone skin.... It's a bear. I used a combination of "round" things to form it around (dowells, rolling pin, pipe etc). clamped over the skin to the table and then form. A pair of nylon web straps help with the muscle part. Mine doesn't fit perfectly, but it's on the bottom!.

If you are building a tail dragger, enlarge the cutout for the tail wheel weldment to as close to final size as possible. This will make the fitting much easier. This advice is worthless for nose draggers.
