Hi fellow builders and flyers,
Looking foward to Airventure in a few weeks and plan on joining
everyone at Bob Collins' BBQ on Wednesday, July 27th.
http://home.comcast.net/~bcollinsrv7a/eaa/
My QB fuselage is due in November and I'm wondering how much work
will
need to be done on it before needing to begin using items from the
finishing kit? In other words, should I order it to come in with or
right after the fuselage?
I know this has been asked before but the thought of looking through
thousands of posts to find the answer is mind numbing so here goes
and
thanks for the repeated responses. What types of paint have those
further along used in the fuselage interior and at what point do you
recomend painting it?

Mike -
I received my finish kit about 6 months after the QB wings and fuse
showed up and I was not waiting for any parts. If your wings are done,
I guess you'd want to not wait that long, and I think I'm probably
making slower than average progress. So, depending what the lead times
are, order it as your fuse kit is showing up, or maybe sooner.
Interior paint: IMHO you'll want to wait as late as possible to do
this, but get it done before you have (for example) the rudder pedals
in for good.
There seem to be (at least) two philosophies with interior paint - just
go with rattle can paint (even though it's not as durable, it's less of
a big deal to touch up) or do something involving paint guns and booths
and all that (more durable, but more involved painting and then
eventually retouching). Most RV folks in this area seem to go with
rattle can sort of stuff, which is what I did - Valspar Satin Finish
Taupe. You can judge the results for yourself:
http://golfsierra.org/5june05/5june05-Pages/Image0.html
Can't tell you how well it holds up over time, though. Oh - and yes, I
didn't use any additional primer on the interior except for what was
already sitting on there. I tested what it looked like and how well it
seemed to stick to the Van's Wash Primer as opposed to how it looked
and how well it seemed to stick after putting on a coat of the
self-etching Sherwin-Williams stuff, and the results seemed the same.
Again, I can't vouch for how well this holds up over time (and if
someone else has more wisdom regarding this, please correct me), but
that's been my experience so far, FWIW.
Hope this helps!

The only real question is money and lead time. I'd recommend it be ordered
before you start on the fuselage. You will need it rather quickly after
getting going on the fuselage

Mike--I just finished painting my 7a interior, and I used a product
called Zolatone...available from Aircraft Spruce in California..Im
pretty pleased with it...The good news is it seems very durable, doesnt
leave any fingerpints, and should have no glare...The bad news is that
it was expensive (around 60 a gallon for the finish and 35 or so for
the zolatone primer)..and it took about 2 gallons to finish the
interior and all the associated parts..Also, its a devil to put on..I
took my fuse and parts to a close friend in the autobody business (he
has paint booths and all the goodies)..Zolatone recommends a 2 step
process, but we got a good result with a one step process, using what
my friend called a "polyester" gun..(the orface where the paint comes
out is very large, not the same size as a normal paint gun)..Zolatone
is very "creamy" and will stop up a normal gun...anyway, it worked out
fine I hope..Im a little concerned about the weight of the paint but
it sure seems to wear like iron..I cant comment about when to paint,
but I reached a point where I had a shelf full of stuff to put on, but
couldnt do it till the interior was painted..I think you will just
know when you are to that point..you will run out of things to
do...good luck.....bkc3921

Two considerations, lead time and money. Order as soon as you can,
especially if you are putting a lot of time in the project.
