Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Rudder Bottom Fiberglass

Author: "Jim Smith" <jsmith@...> Time: Sat Jul 9, 2005 2:46 pm PDT Link

I am ready to attach the fiberglass rudder bottom with pop-rivets. I know I need to countersink the fiberglass, but do I need to dimple the aluminum flange it attaches to? Also I am assuming that I need to pop-rivet the front of the fiberglass bottom to the Horn Brace and Front Spar, right? The plans don't show any pop-rivets at these locations.

Thanks!

Jim

You don't need to countersink the flanges.

I riveted it to the brace but I don't remember if I put one through
the spar or not. I doubt that it is that critical.

If you are building a taildragger you may have an interference
problem with the tailwheel spring. I'm glad I waited to put my
rudder bottom on until I was nearly finished because there is no way
the rudder bottom would go on mine without serious modification. I
cut a flat spot in the bottom to clear the tailwheel spring. Van may
have fixed it by now mine was a pretty early kit.

Godspeed,

Phil
