This has me thinking...
Is there a need for 2 mil cast vinyl sticks for panels as well as
exterior graphics? I have been thinking this is a way to supplement
my income to pay for this crazy hobby but wasn't sure how much need
for it there was. I have the equipment already so it's no big issue
for me. I can cut as well as print outdoor durable vehicle graphics
and banners. I'm not soliciting business from the group (yet :) ),
just wanting your input.
Would you be interested in kits of graphics containing things such as
"No Step" and "Experimental" or would it all need to be all custom
graphics?

Sid,
Is this technology suitable for panel labels? I am talking about the small stuff over and under switches like "On", "Off". Thanks Sid.

I don't see a problem with the thickness, as long as it is 'clean', which vinyl is. As long as you are doing vinyl now, how about putting a few samples on a painted piece of scrap & posting a few pics. Sounds like a nice alternative.

Depends on the type of clear coat. Most automative style clear coats
are too "hot" for vinyl. There are a few manufactures of clear coats
designed to cover vinyl but they are not well suited to replace
automotive style clears on other substrates. I would not suggest
clearing vinyl anyway because it does expand and contrast with paint
more so than clears does. This would introduce the possibility of the
paint(clear) cracking around the edge of the vinyl and failing.
On a side note: After doing some cost considerations, cutting the
very small letters for the panel is just not as cost effective as
using a rub down technology. However, vinyl does make sense for
things such as the "Experimental" and "No Step" letters that most of
us are used to. The fact that I can print directly to the vinyl
opens the creative choices for these graphics. Such as gradient
fills, 1 layer outline and shadows and and even image fills like
diamond plate.

Bill,
I posted a few pics and a small how-to for those who have not seen
vinyl in action. I still have a few bugs to work out on the custom
letters part. Sorry, I don't have anything painted right now and all
I have are dark vehicles. I will update those pictures very soon.
