Author: "n824rv" <n824rv@...> Time: Fri Jul 15, 2005 9:56 am PDT Link

I am in the process of deciding on which Comm antenna to install on my
RV-7A. I would like to go with a belly mount with 45 degree angle. Has
anyone had any success with the Stainless Steel VHF Comm Antenna for
homebuilts from Aircraft Spruce. It is much less expensive then the
others. Any input would be appreciated

I started with the Archer antenna in my left wingtip, and replaced it
after repeated problems talking/listening to anyone off the right wing.
The belly-mount bent rod works great, and I can't measure the speed
difference.

I know what you are talking about, the simple whip Stainless steel
bent whip antenna w/ white egg insulator:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/av534.php

You will find the antenna lead attaches to the whip with crimp wire
connections and nut. The ground is the same, and you must attach it
with a screw and nut to the airplane ground. This is not very
efficient and subject to corrosion and loose connections. The Egg
shaped insulator is not very attractive and likely very draggy.

Go with a standard bent whip with the integrated base and BNC
connector the price difference is not that great. The price
difference is not that much from the better-sealed BNC connector
antennas, which are a little more rugged and have a better more
stable mount base. The cheap whip looks ugly adn may have more drag
wiht that egg insulator hanging out there.

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/com_comant.php

SAY NO TO INTERNAL ANTENNAS:
No disrespect to Bob Archer or Bill Swaim, but don't go with the
internal wing tip comm antenna. You will have long coax runs and poor
performance. Yes some people say they work great, but "works great"
is relative and means they can talk to the tower 5 miles away and
only if they are pointed the right way. This is not great. Tell me
you can talk 120 miles in all directions and I will be impressed. A
belly bent whip will give you much better performance any day, and it
will be much easier to install, maintain and likely be a lighter
intallation. The idea behind Bob Archers antenna is saving the
antenna drag. I have measured and calculated the max drag of one bent
belly whip antenna. One comm. antenna produces at max about .50 mph
worth of drag at 200 mph, conservatively, probably less. So what,
especially if you have a hard time talking to ATC or other planes
which is a safety issue. When I race by the way I took my VOR and
Comm antennas off, which took about 4 minutes. I used a hand held
during the race. I found out the speed difference was so slight
verified by flight and analytical calculations I stopped taking off
the Comm. antenna when I raced. It did not make much difference and
my 150HP RV-4 still beat most 160HP and a few 180hp RV's.

Save your time money and get a proper modern sealed base antenna with
a BNC connector and put it on your RV, you will have no issues and
should last the life of the plane. They only cost about $130, or look
for one off of eBay for half that.

Cheers George

Hi George,
those are very interesting comments, considering that I did buy a Bob Archer
wing tip antenna a while ago, the main reason being a clean outside surface.
Looking at the antennas that Spruce has for sale, which one would you
recommend, if any of them.
The CI-122 or the CI-291.

Thanks - I am using Sportcraft VOR antenna, but will go with a bent whip on the belly for VHF Comm. The RV already has speed & I won't compromise on Communications. Thanks again group!
