Hello RV'ers:
Im in the process of installing the high pressure fuel pump for an IO
engine, as well as the brake and vent lines...There are some pretty
sharp (1 inch bend radii) 3/8 inch tubing bends on the pump. I have
the handle type bender as well as the spring type, but have had
nothing but bad luck trying to make the tubing fit right, bend
properly, and look good. At first, I just kinked the tube..now my
brain is kinked...Any sugggestions appreciated...Thanks!!

Are you oiling the tube bender? Imho, always oil your tubing tools
(bending, flaring, cutting, etc.).
If that's not it, then it's just a practice makes perfect thing. I ordered
like a gazillion extra feet of 1/4" and 3/8" tubing, and I used a fair
amount of it "practicing" (ahem...practicing == screwing up and having to
redo things).

You're right - looks so easy but can be frustrating. The secret is
get a good 180 degree bender. I don't have a picture of the one I
used but I read on someone's websites that the one from Sears does OK.
I think this is it:

another suggestion about a 180 degree bender that I will try..
but even with that Im a little nervous about getting the sleeves on
the miserable tube with so short a clearance...will let you know how
it goes, thanks...Brian Cutler...7a Fuse

Check out the bender mods on my tools page - that should help.

Look at "Tony Bingelis" Firewall foreward, Engine instalations methodes Book (the red one) on page 148, Annealing Alumium Tubes
A give the text here and hope this is ok:
Aluminum tubing also hardens under prolonged vibration and after bendingg and severe forming. If the tubing becomes difficult to bend it should be annealed using one of the following methods:
1. Heat the aluminum tube uniformly with a torch to the point where it will char a soft wood scarp when you touch the tube to it. Allow the tubing to air cool.
2. Another (perhaps safer) method is to heat the aluminum tube with the carbonizing flame of a welding torch until the tube is coted with carbon soot. readjust the torch to a neutral flame and carefully play the flame over the blackened tube until all of the carbon is burned off. Allow the tubeing to air cool.
Maybe an material engineer can supply the temp. and time to do this in an oven (which would be more safe) or you give the tube to an company that can do this for you.

A test for annealing aluminium that I learned years ago was to rub some soap
on it, then heat it with a gas torch until the soap coating goes black.
Cheers,
John
