Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Counterweight dimple and countersink size

Author: "Andy Bell" <bellwa99@...> Time: Thu Jul 21, 2005 8:09 pm PDT Link

I am working on the rudder for my RV-7. I was in the process of
riveting on the counterweight skin when I realized I hadn't drilled out
the counterweight and dimpled counterweight rib to receive the number
10 flush screw. I think I can still do it but I can't figure out what
size dimple dies or counter sink bit to use. If the screw is #10, do I
use a number 10 drill bit, dimple die set and counter sink bit? None of
these came with my kit from Avery. I got number 8 and 9 dimple dies and
the biggest countersink bit is number 20. My bonehead mistake and the
fact that I have to order this stuff from Avery (a day after I had some
stuff overnighted from them) really burns me up. AM I right? I need a
number 10 drill bit, #10 dimple dies and a number 10 countersink bit? I
can't find a #10 countersink bit on the Avery site. Is there some
fractional equivelent? Thanks for any help you can provide. If I get
some answers I will get another package overnighted. #10 dimples dies
are 20 bucks for the male and 20 bucks for the female. Sheesh!

Andy,

I think for the price of a hamburger and fries, you
might get a local mechanic to do two holes countersunk
and two dimpled. It worked for me.

In the Cleveland Aircraft catalog, there's a pullout that you can put on the
wall that is very handy. It'll tell you that an AN509-10 requires a finald
drill size and countersink Pilot of a #10. But be careful. No, the screw
number is not the same as te drill bit number. It just works out that way
with the 509-10. For example, a #8 screw is a smaller screw. If you used a
#8 drill bit, you'd be making a bigger hole. A #8 screw requires a #19 drill
bit.

I bought the #10 dimple dies from Bob Avery and I'll bet I've used it about
3 times so far. The #8 I use a bit more.. I've never counterusnk for a #10
screw (although I do hve to figure out how to do that since I'm looking at a
#10 hole in the longeron right now and have to cuntersink it.

Not sure wher eyou are in your building, but for the first year it seems all
you do is order tools. The Avery kits are nice, but they just scratch the
surface.

Bob,
Since the countersinks are all 100 degree included angle, just drill the
hole #30 and use the #30 countersink. Countersink deep enough to let the
#10 screw head sit flush then open the #30 hole to clearance diameter for
the #10 screw.

For the counterweight rib, don't bother with teh #10 dimple die,
just use a #8 dimple die. The #10 screw will suck up into the rib
just fine as long as the countersunk hole in the weight is big
enough. I would also recommend using any countersink cutter on the
weight, since they all use the same 100 degree cutter.

I will add one more thought to this line of conversation.

Since we only have a couple of -10 dimples to make. I drilled a
partial hole in a piece of steel barstock and gently tapped a dimple
in the alum skin using the barstock as the bucking bar.

Yea, but heck I didn't have a -10 dimple set.

So u improvise.

Andy,

For the dimple I used a #8 die then cut an oversized hole in a block of
wood. I put the #10 screw in the #8 dimple, placed the piece with the screw
on top of the block of wood, with the screw and dimple centered over the
hole, and gently tapped the top of the #10 screw until the screw was flush,
using the screw to oversize the dimple. Not perfect but I don't think it
needs to be in this application.

Thanks for everyone's input. You've all been a great
help. I've had quite a few "Why didn't I think of
that" moments. I am going to be the guy who tests
Van's claim that someone with average skills can build
one of these. Hell, I trouble getting the wheels on my
air compressor.
