Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Tailwheel spring

Author: Phil Birkelbach <phil@...> Time: Tue Jul 26, 2005 12:56 pm PDT Link

I put the springs on my tailwheel last night and there something that is
bothering me. When the rudder is at full deflection the chain touches
the rudder bottom. It doesn't really get it in a bind but it touches.
I think this is because I have "WAAAYY" too much slack in the chains. I
plan to tighten the chains up but I'm afraid that it'll start binding up
on the rudder. Here are a couple of pictures so that you can see what I
am talking about.

Sorry the pictures are bad but the hangar doesn't have nearly the light
my garage did. Boy do I miss my lights and my air conditioner. :-(

Phil

I would agree. That doesn't look very desirable.

I bought one of those Rocket Links.

It sure cleans up the linkage.

I'm considering buying one of those. Will it extend down far enough to
clear the rudder bottom? I still can't understand why my rudder bottom
has all these interference problems. I wonder if there are two
different ones for the nosegear and tailwheel?

The Rocket strut has a dog-leg in it. It just bolts right on.

It does have a rod end bearing to adjust the length.

I doubt there are different rudders. But I did shorten up the
fiberglass cap by about an inch if I remember correctly.

Gives it a little more clearance with the top of the tailwheel.
