Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Headset Jack Location

Author: "dannylsmith" <dsmit132@...> Time: Tue Nov 1, 2005 11:42 am PST Link

I would like some input from you flying RV-6, 7 or 9 folks on the best
location for the headset jacks. I want to keep the cockpit as free of
clutter as possible. I'm getting ready to wire this bad boy!

Danny

FWIW I put mine in the seatback bulkhead between the two seats.

So that the plugs push in vertically. That gets the cords out of the
way reaching toward the panel.

The other choice is to put them on each outside wall maybe in the rear
part of the arm rest. That separates the two sets of headset cords.
Mine stay tangled a bit being that close together. I put a 'hanger'
consisting of a piece of .063 angle perpendicular to the roll bar
support, tip-up model.

They will hang there while parked, but the spare pair will crash to the
floor of the baggage comp when flying solo.

How about the back of the seat. Also, add a small
hook there for the headseat to store. It is my plan
anyways.

My Tech Counselor has his headsets connected under the instrument panel and
created small "T" shaped hooks out of stiff aluminum sheet which he mounted
along the outside wall (both sides) under the dash about mid-calf to hang
his two headsets. The headsets are always in the airplane. The hooks are
high enough not to bother the legs, but low enough to be seen without
ducking your head under the dash to find them.

My thought, for what it is worth, is that any place you can access
easily and safely while in flight is appropriate. While the plugs
don't come out that often, if they do and you try to reach around
behind a seat to plug them back in you may be asking for trouble.

Good luck.
