Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: quickbuild instructions

Author: "rmoynie" <rmoynihan@...> Time: Tue Nov 1, 2005 11:42 am PST Link

Hey Guys,
I'm new to the group and I am just starting a quickbuild 7A. I did
the empanage at Nick Alexanders class a few months ago. I know Van's
says to read all the instuctions for the standard build kit, which I
am doing but are there any instructions or guidance out there
specifically for the quickbuild.
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,
I'm also doing a 7A QB, and what I would recommend is to go through ALL the
instructions just as if you were doing a standard kit.
This way, what you do is to VERIFY that each of the steps was done to your
personal satisfaction, but the great thing is, you didn't have to actually
do it yourself. Just check off each step you've verified as you go.
This will also serve to make sure you don't miss something that you thought
was done by the QB crew but wasn't.

Rich: you have received some good suggestions. Here is mine. I was
advised to start with the wings. They are relatively simple and go
fast. One piece of advice -- countersink the flap brace. Use a good
microstop countersink. I dimpled mine and had to put a .020 strip
behind to strengthen. Follow the construction manual on the rest of
the project you won't miss anything. I had some rivets that should
not have been in, and some that should have been in that weren't.
Check under where the rollbar channel goes. Mine was missing rivets
there. Check for missing bolts in the forward fuselage spar box. 4
an-3 bolts missing here. Rivets were driven where the flap brace
goes - I had to drill them out. These are all minor issues. Van's
does a nice job and the builders help line is great.
Regards,
John S.

Rich: I should have been more clear. countersink the flap brace so
that the flap hinge will fit flat behind it. I dimpled the brace
which caused problems with fitting the hinge, therefore the necessaty
for the .020 strip. The instructions weren't too clear here -- or I
just didn't read them correctly

John
