Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Brake Reservoir

I have seen some builders use small brake reservoirs attached directly to
the master cylinders.

Question:
The reservoir is no longer the high point in the brake system. How well
will these work? When bleeding the system, the high part of the black brake
lines may not be full of brake fluid. Anyone have practicle experience doing
this? I'd love to eliminate all those leaking plastic lines like I had in my
last aircraft.

Bob,

The rudder petals are closer together on the 7 than on Vans tandem
seaters. Also I believe that the pipe fittings on the master cylinder
face the firewall on the tandem seaters. Due to these differences, I ran
into a couple of major problems installing the duel reservoirs.

As is, the two reservoirs will hit cause interference with rudder petal
movement. I was able to solve this issue in a semi elegant manner by
modifying the reservoirs.

The pipe fittings of the master cylinder on the 7 face toward the pilot
(ie. towards the pilots feet). There is the large possibility that you
can kick the reservoir out of alignment which will cause the rudder
interference. I never found an elegant way to safety the reservoirs in
place.

In the end, I went back to Vans plans. Good luck

FWIW...

I used a dab of non-hardening automotive gasket sealant on the threads
and Mercon ATF instead of brake fluid. It has been 3 years with zero
leaks. The ATF is 20 times cheaper than the MIL-SPEC stuff.
