Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: PlexiGlass and proseal

Author: "Carl Morgan" <zk-vii@...> Time: Wed Nov 2, 2005 9:18 pm PST Link

Hi,

We are currently working with the plexi-glass, just done the 'big cut'
(tip-up) - so far so good....

What sealant / bedding have people used between the roll-bar and the rear
window?

Is Pro-Seal and PlexiGlass a good idea? I have a gut feeling acetone in the
ProSeal w/ Plexi is not a good look.....

Thanks,

Carl

Hi Carl

I posted a similar question last month:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RV7and7A/message/26203

Bobby Hester sent a helpful reply.

I could not find "Lexel" in NZ but used ADOS clear co-polymer sealant.
I think it is the same type of product.

Lexel seems to be a good choice for the skirts on the
slider canopy and Sitkaflex for the windscreen
bedding. Both are marine adhesive/sealants available
from marine suppliers. Lexel seems to be popular with
the kayak guys. Just Google Lexel sealant and you will
find several online sellers.

carl

scotch 88 electrical filler tape works pretty good.

A strip layed down, its mildy sticky, on the roll bar and the plexi
bedded onto that.

It makes a seal and provides a cushion.

worked for me

Hi Carl,

I've been advised by acrylic manufaturers to be extremely careful with most
sealants and solvents, including pro-seal like products. Acrylic can become
opaque or brittle by solvents in the glue/sealant, sometimes not directly
but in the long term.
We have used Sikaflex for your goal and it worked out very good. Other
builders have also used this with good results. Be aware however that you'll
have the right combination of cleaner/primer/glue. For the tip-up you'll
need:

- SikaCleaner 205, 1x250ml
- SikaPrimer 209, 1x250ml
- Sikaflex 295UV, 2 cartridges of 310ml

Find more information on

contact me directly.

Scotch 88 is a thicker than normal electrical tape. I think its a
filler tape for electrical joints.

A layer of this makes a nice gasket/cushion/bed for the plexi to sit
on.

Cary,

Some clarfication here. Scotch 88 is general use
electricat tape. It is thin and not used for filler.
It's main quality is that is used for outside and cold
condition as it maintains flexibility in the cold.

Scotch 130 is thick. It can be used for filler. We
electricians call it rubber tape. It's main use is to
create an insulation layer on split bolt connections,
which are then covered with Scotch 33 or Scotch 88.

thanks dave

Scotch 130 it is.

I didn't have the model number here at work. Yep, its a rubberlike
product.

Its also pretty common. The local Ace Hardware store has it.
