Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Wingmating housekeeping

Author: "Bob Collins" <bcollinsrv7a@...> Time: Thu Nov 3, 2005 2:48 pm PST Link

I've worked my way step-by-step through the instructions and, having
finished the landing gear mount, have arrived at "mating the wings."

I've done pretty much everything that's in the instructions so far,
but I'm wondering if experienced folks have found it best to do
anything beyond what's in the instructions to make the task simpler.

The deal is it's November, it's getting colder, it's a two-car garage
but one wing is going to have to stick out onto the driveway area and
I'd like to get this process done as quickly as possible since the
garage door will have to stay up and that's an invitation for the
riff-raff to come in and help themselves to thousands of dollars worth
of tools if the process extends beyond a day. So I really want to get
'em on....do what I need to do...and get 'em off again.

Thanks in advance.

Bob: I found it helpful to make two bullets out of hardware bolts for initial line-up of the
main spar bolts. The disc sander worked well to shape the bullets. I also polished them
on a buffing pad. A little light grease and they slip right in. One goes top, the other on
the bottom. The gear weldments interfere with pushing the bullets back out, so choose
your holes carefully. I had to remove a little more off of the ends of the fuselage forks
than called for in the plans to relieve the forward sweep. I made a series of drill blocks out
of one inch thick aluminum to drill the rear spars. I clamped them in place with a vice grip
of the type used for welding. Working quarters were tight. I used 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, and
finally 5/16. I bought new 12" bits for the occasion and used lots of Boe Lube. The drill
blocks worked very well; the
holes are round and normal to the surface. The bolts have a nice snug sliding fit, no slop.
If you don't have aluminum that thick I think 1/2 mild steel bar would work, too. Just cut
off four pieces about 1 1/2 long and drill your guide holes on a drill press. Also, rather
than a chalk line on the floor I used monofilament fishing line taped to the garage floor
and this was easy to adjust to the position of the airplane. Also, you may wish to install R
and L fuel lines so you can cut the ends to mate to the tanks. Don't forget the segment of
fuel vent line between the fuselage and wings. And, of course, the wing fairings. And the
forward tank attachments. And the ailerons and flaps. It was a whole weekend job for me,
and I did it in the summer with a cool breeze and iced tea.
Good luck, I hope this is helpful. Steve

Are the fairings in the fuselage kit?

Ah, OK, thanks. I'll have to pass on that, then. Haven't ordered it yet.

Why not just order the wing root fairings (not the whole finish kit) now?
May as well get it all done now...wing mating, sweep & incidence, flap
pushrod, wing root fairing, tank attach, aileron rigging, fuel plumbing. If
you do it now, it's fewer things to do later when you get to the airport.
Just slap the wings on, bolt everything on, and go fly (well, pretty much).

Next time I'll order my wing root fairings with the fuselage kit
specifically. I wish Van's did it that way by default. I assume they don't
because the -7 and -9 fuselage kits are probably packed & shipped (mostly)
identically? The -7 and -9 have different wing root fairings, I believe.

Heck of an idea. It didn't even occur to me. Good advice today, folks.
Thanks.
