Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Fuel tank leak test

Author: "Jim Kirks" <jms@...> Time: Thu Nov 3, 2005 10:29 pm PST Link

HI and thanks in advance for your help. I'm getting ready to install
the tank access plate/fuel sender and then comes the
exciting/suspenseful leak test. I've searched the archives and
decided to discard the gaskets and use proseal only. However, I have
a few what if concerns, i.e. what if I decide to go with fuel
injection system that needs a fuel return line which I've not
installed. What if I do have a leak that could be accessed through
the access plate cover. Soooo my question is has anybody in the group
ever had to remove a prosealed access plate? If so was it as hard as
it seems like it would be? Was anything damaged in the process,or
sacrifice plate cover?
Thanks Jim

Jim:

I just went through sealing my access plate with proseal only and the
subsequent leak testing. Unfortunately I had a leak in the center post of
one of my BNC connectors (capacitance senders) so I had to remove an access
plate.

In my experience, removing the plate was not a big deal. Once you get a
foothold under the plate, you can wedge it off pretty easy. I was amazed at
how little of the proseal was actually left under the plate. Most of it
squishes to the periphery and forms sort of a gasket .

Bottom line.....Don't hesitate to go with omitting the cork and just using
proseal.
