Read from the bottom to get the context.

I would guess this would not apply to SubE!

You are correct. You want the wings attached, and Prop attached. The
Lycoming and that type engines will do a bit of shaking.

If starting the engine, any engine, w/o the wings attached causes
structural damage then I think I made a major mistake purchasing this
kit airplane. :(

Would be nice to find out what kind of damage has been experienced to
cause the warning.

I'm thinking that no structural damage is possible other than perhaps
tipping the plane over due to the significantly decreased roll moment of
inertia. (You know, a quick throttle up to full power *may* be enough to
roll the plane due to the reduced weight and moment).

Just a guess.

Most aeroplanes similar to ours will not be happy without the wings on
if you run the engine. The wings act as large dampers to the torque
and power pulses from the engine. If the c of g and undercarriage
track were different, the whole thing would be more stable. It has
little to do with the design, more to do with basic physics.

My guess is that the wings, with a long rotational
moment arm, act as dampeners. One bad hit on a
cylinder and the prop stops while the fuselage
rotates.

I'm certainly not a structural Engineer, but am an ME. It would seem to me that, as stated below, without the wings attached the very short roll moment would allow a relatively large rotation, very quickly, one direction. But that would be followed by the same in the other direction. Same momentum, shorter arm. I can see this large & rapid oscillation possibly causing damage - IMHO. Would it be kind of like maneuvering speed.....less weight, quicker movements and hence lower allowable speed?
If you tied the whole fuse down with large bungee cords at the wing root, you could probably come close to duplicating operation with the wings attached. For the record, I'll wait till my wings are attached.

I think this is the result of message degradation resulting from
passing through multiple people until it gains urban myth status. If
the FAA gets a hold of this one we will be required to install a
placard that reads: "WARNING: operating the aircraft without the wings
installed on may cause structural damage and possible death."

Besides, how's a guy supposed to feed fuel to the beast if the tanks
are on the wings? IMHO, the best time to start the engine for testing
is when the plane is about ready to fly. No need to scare the
neighbors with a runway engine (forgot to wire the kill wires?) as one
desperately tries to squeeze the fuel line to starve the engine.
