I have a couple questions:
1. When is a child old enough to fly in an RV (or any plane for that matter)?. My wife is concerned about hearing protection for the child.
2. Has anyone modified a -7 or -6 for a carseat to hold a child in the back? or is that even possible or safe?
We are having a baby in 5 weeks and am concerned about whether the -7 is now going to work for our new family of 3. I still have another
year and a half to go till completion of the -7. Should I just cut my losses and sell the -7 now (at fuse stage) and start on a -10?

My wife and I just had a little one seven weeks ago. My building time
has now decreased dramatically. I too share the concern about the
size, but overall, I'm not that concerned, as my own personal
expectations of the aircraft are to fly and have fun, with moving
people as a second.
Surfing the net I did see an installation with a car seat in the back
at one point. I think this would be a rather short term solution.
Also, one of my coworkers has an RV-4 and he took his little ones up
within the first few months. Big giant Oregon Aero headset padding
with an ANR for their ears. Seems to have worked, though that might
have contributed to why not one of his three kids is yet at all
interested in flying...

A child can start flying from the moment they are conceived. My
daughters, 5.5 and 1 yrs old, have been flying from day one. We have
been on 4 hours trips, and up to 10,000 feet without any problems.
If there is any chance their sinuses might be an issue, i.e. due to a
cold or congestion, then give them a decongestant as recommended by
your doctor. Also keep the descent rates below 500fpm, I usually plan
for 300fpm.
As far as earplugs goes, there are wax plugs that fill the ear opening
instead of descending into the ear. They seem to work well, and we also
add a pair of sound proofing earmuffs or a child headset over those.
She most likely has the quietest ride of us all.
I plan to rent a 4 seater for the 3 or 4 trips a year we all take as a
family. I also here that a lot of people share time with other owners
so you can swap planes from time to time. For me, the 10 is just too
expensive now, and I really want to do some aerobatics in the 7.

I am not a pilot-
I am a mother, and I am married to a pilot.
I too have seen all kinds of aircraft modified to accomodate children and
there is an RV out there fitted with an infant seat.
I think the RV7 is what it is a two-person aircraft and no matter how big
or small, the plane is designed to hold two people. I think that can be
varied, slightly and perhaps only short term. When my daughter was little
I was little-r too and she did ride a few times short trips on my lap- She
loved to fly then,.....and loves to fly now. She's "bit by the bug" my
husband says.
I think all children are different. They should be able to fly in their
own seat, buckled/harnessed appropriately, and only when they are ready to
fly- by this I mean, they have to be sure they WANT to fly, they cannot be
scared to fly, and they must be able to follow simple instructions. Sit
still, watch this, tell me if..., do not touch these buttons, etc. We have
two daughters and two sons. Each was ready to fly at different ages/stages
- my husband has given rides to other children (not ours) - and
grandchildren now - and each situation is different.
There was a small child where the plane was hangarded that begged everytime
we were there for a ride, finally when he had the chance, he sat still and
listened intently to the three minutes of instruction my husband provided
smiling broadly. Then the minute the plane started to taxi he panicked and
wanted out. Uncontrollably sobbing. Several tries later he had a first
flight and did okay but does not want to fly anymore - other children much
younger than he did much better first trip - and then a 10 year old in the
plane could not follow instruction and kept reaching out and pulling on
the stick (kitfox plane) for no explainable reason adn despite several
speeches re: the danger of this - he kept doing it in a seemingly nervous
type reaction to being in the plane so the ride was terminated - he has not
been back up since!
The RV7 is designed for fun and recreational flying for two people that is
why we are building ours. To those of you building a 7 I suggest you
continue - families will grow and the passenger in the sideseat will change
but there are other planes out there for "people moving" and your needs to
really do that on a larger scale will probably be few. Our family is large
and we did consider, since we already have a two-seater, building something
bigger - but then we went with the 7. One thought most prominent is that
this is a "special" thing- usually our special thing and one of the few
things we actually do together, .................alone. Some years more
than others too. The kids see it that way too. They take turns going
flying and attending fly-ins with "dad" and they have their special alone
times with him - building great memories this way. Practically speaking
too there are very few years the kids fly with you - a friend of ours has
two daughters and bought a 6 person plane and found most often they were up
in it alone. When they are little they are often too little to enjoy most
flights and once they are old enough they want to be with friends and not
parents. Then they are teens (too quickly) and are off
working/driving/dating -school comittments and sports of their own, then
the big plane is too big. Just an opinion form thr "other seat"
Keep building, fly safe and enjoy!
