Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Starting an online petition to get Dan to paint his plane

Author: "luap71" <luap71@...> Time: Mon Nov 21, 2005 3:27 pm PST Link

Lets start a petition to convince Dan its time to paint the plane!

I visit rvproject.com and see he plain lined up next to all the other
great looking planes and it just looks out of place, even when he
tries to shine it up, still does not look right.

So come all, join me and say:

DAN PAINT YOUR DANG PLANE.

All in jest of course.

BTW Dan, good job on the articles you have been writing, maybe the
next topic can be paint :-)

> DAN PAINT YOUR DANG PLANE.

I know, I know, the plane flies soooo much better and you're soooo much more
proud of it when it's painted. Whooptedoo.

I'd rather fly & travel. I have a whole mess of flying trips planned
through the end of 2006. Even if I *wanted* to throw all that travel away
on paint, I am not taking the plane down anytime soon. Taking it down for
the condition inspection is about as long as I can stand. The cockpit of my
RV-7 is my office, my home away from home, my view of the world. What am I
gonna do if the plane's in the paint shop for 6+ weeks, sit on the couch and
eat bon-bons?

Yesterday my passenger (an RV-4 pilot who is in a battle with the FAA over
his medical) noted that I'm probably gonna have to replace my carpet pretty
soon. There are "foot dents" on my side. When I told him that it's already
my 2nd carpet, he laughed out loud. It's gonna be worn out by the time I
paint. Oh, well -- this plane was built to FLY, not to look perty.

When I was young I had dreams of moving freely in three dimensions, not
dreams of standing next to a plane with a fancy paint job.

Everything in moderation. Except flying! Get it while the gettin's good.

I get my magazines mixed u but I THINK that Kitplanes just completed a
four-part series on painting, didn't they. I believe Roberta Hegy was
heavily favored. Good article -- real meat and potatoes for current
builders.

No way. Why do you want to tick him off? Especially if you appreciate his
free website? Maybe he will start charging for access to raise funds for
the paint job. If my plane turns out as good as Dan's, I wouldn't paint her
either. If you don't like it, don't look at it!!!

BTW, thanks Dan, keep up the great site and pay no attention to the "paint
it" crowd. Only someone who is truly comfortable with his metal work will
leave the bird in its natural plumage.

Hmmmm, how about a bunch of RVers with sharpies paint
up Dan "Sharpie" Checkoway's 7 for him. Lots of new
colors available. Make it a BBQ fly in. Bring the
kids, they would enjoy painting too. :-) JK of course.

Just in case you you all missed an important part of my post

> All in jest of course.

I enjoy seeing the pictures of Dan buffing out his plane to make it all shinny as much as anyone. If it wasn't for the fiberglass parts I would actually consider going the shinny silver bullet in the sky look myself, although it would be alot of work to keep it actually shinny, especially if one flew as often as Dan.

If you want to paint your fiberglass stuff and have it
be shiny, there are amazing, but expensive options:

This stuff is $1200/gallon!

I temporarily lost my mind and buffed out my tailcone 2 weeks ago. It
looked awesome that night. 2 weeks later (~20 flight hours) it looks like
crap again. It sat outside a few nights in there. It needs constant
attention to keep the polished look pristine.

It has been over a year since I polished my wings and tail surfaces. I
clean them with wet terry cloths and dry with a cotton t-shirt. Even that
scratches them up.

Dan sounds like a radical guy.

Is there a way to polish it, get it nice and shiny, and then coat it to
keep air off of the surface? I was thinking of painting only the
fiberglass parts and leaving most of the aluminum unpainted, but I don't
want to spend the rest of my life polishing.

Thanks,
Martin

I'm with Dan on this one... Why paint it? Looks? Who cares. I'm building the RV7 to flyyyyy... The inside and outside will be the aluminum finish just like it came out of the crate. Maybe a stripe here or there.

Pardon my ignorance. When you polish the bare aluminum, do you/can
you (intentionally or accidentally) remove the alclad? If you have
scratched through the alclad can you still safely have a polished
finish? Do you put wax on the aluminum?

(thanks for not laughing)

Best,
Tom

<SNIP>When you polish the bare aluminum, do you/can you
(intentionally or accidentally) remove the alclad?<SNIP>

ISFASK, polished aluminum has the alclad removed. How else could one
polish a metal unless you get to the metal itself.

Best is to try it on your own scrap aluminum and polish one half to a
mirror surface and the other half stays virgin with its alclad
cover.

Then apply a wax coat to one half of the polished aluminum and one
half of the virgin aluminum. That should yield 4 test samples:
Polished
Polished with Wax
Alclad Only
Alclad with Wax

Let it sit outside for as long as it takes to build the airplane.

After all that time you will not see much difference on either sample
that a little polish can't fix.

Maybe Dan is on to something...
Less weight, less mmoney, less time to build etc...

Maybe we should start an unpainted squadron of RV7 and we could meet
at Oshkosh every year or is that too rebelious ;-)

Finally some real words of wisdom on this list. 8^)

On this morning's practice flights, we had two painted and two unpainted
(RV-4 and my RV-7). Had some real nice color symmetry going. Now...was it
a coincidence that the unpainted planes kept having to throttle back for the
others? Hm.... Just kidding. 8^)

How about painted but no internal primer? Dan has already sprayed as
much paint on the inside of his airplane as I will put on the outside of
mine. Guess I shouldn't plan on making too many of the Oshkosh get
togethers since my plane will probably corrode away because of no primer :-)
