I have heard Est's vary from 10 to 30 lbs and my guess is some paint jobs weigh more. My guess it tends to go towards the 30lbs than lighter.
First did you prime every square inch inside and out?
Van does not prime his planes. He etches and alodines but puts the top coat on the metal, no primer. I think you should use a primer, but a wash primer, not a filler primer. However Van is trying to build the plane LIGHT.
The trend is towards base / clear coat paint jobs with multistrips. I am guessing if you go hog wild priming, filling, priming, filling and base plus multi trims and clear coat you can add the LB's on.
If you want to lay on thick and block it over and over to fill the rivets in and other things to get a CAR like finish you will pay a weight penalty. For me it is a metal plane and I want to see the metal work. If I want a fiberglass plane I would have built one. :-)
To answer you question it can be a lot if you are not careful. G

The weight on my -6 increased by 8 pounds with paint. Used the same
CALIBRATED scales both times.
