Allen,
Good source on the LED bulbs. Have you looked at possible base socket configurations or sources?

Greg,
I am looking into all the info that everyone has given me regarding positon, strobes and landing/taxi lighting. I am very interested in the site with the LED lamps and will more than likely purchase some to experiment with.
Since I have a strong background in lighting as an Electrical Contractor, I plan to look into all the lighting options. When I have figured out what I think is the best route to go, I will report back to the group.
Thanks,
Alan Wallace

I am an automotive technician with Saturn. I have a
socket that I plan on using, it has a Saturn part
number, and so far I see no problem with using it. I
can post the part number when I get home tonight. ( I
dont have it right now ) I will post pictures of my
setup when I get them installed. Allen

Allen,
I would like that number, I have ordered a couple different types of LED lamps but need to find sockets. I will be able to check the amount of light ouput of the LED lamps with my light meter and compare them to incandescent position light output.
Thanks,
Alan

Alan,
Are you aware of the phenomenon of "supercharging" LEDs by having them
switch on and off at a very fast rate (faster than the eye can detect in any
case)?
The theory being that by doing this, one can push more current through the
LED without it overheating. At the same time, the eye doesn't average the
output, but only registers the peaks and thus sees the light much brighter.
The eye likes moving and changing pictures better than stationary ones
anyway, so that might have something to do with it too (ever dropped a
washer? As long as it's moving you see it, no problem. Once it lies still on
the floor, you'll have a hard time finding it. Our eyes at work)
In short:
1 - If you go for maximum effect, then there's more to getting light out of
a LED than putting a resistor in series with it and applying 12 volts.
2 - Make sure that your light meter also registers the peaks like your eyes
do, not the mean value.
I believe Jim Weir has written a few pages on this in his KITPLANES colum
year ago, including a schematic on how to produce the required hardware from
radio shack parts. You might be able to google that.
FWIW.
