What is the span of the horizontal stabilizer for the -9A? I am
ready to build a work bench in my garage and I need an idea what
minimum length and width I will want.
Thanks,

Tom, The HS is about 10 feet long when completed, but you do not need a work
bench that long. You build each half separately then connect them. Check some
of the website links from Vans website. I got the plans for an easy to build
workbench off one of the sites. I don't remember which one. One thing I don't
regret doing was building my benches high enough. It saves my back because I
don't have to bend over to work on something. On one of my work benchs, I used
an old 32" solid wood door and screwed particle board to the top of it. Now
when I want to drill something, I have a perfectly flat surface that I don't
care if I get holes in. When the top gets bad looking, I just unscrew the top,
toss it and replace it with a fresh piece of particle board. This i also nice
when you screw down your HS cradles and Leading edge and tank cradles. I can
screw or unscrew them to the table top as often as I need to.
Some other factors of setting up a shop is having plenty of shelves to put
airplane parts on so you can find them when you need them. Figure out where you
are going to put all the tools so they will be easy to find, etc. A few minutes
saved here and there really add up. Lighting is another big factor. I used a
combination of 4 ft floerencent fixtures and incandencent fixtures on the
cieling. You can never have too many, but you can have too few. I also have a
pair of halogen lights on a tripod to move around where I need spot lighting.
This is just a start. Other items to plan are your cleaning, priming areas,
paint booth, compressed air system and where to put the finished pieces after
you complete them so they are out of the way and safe from garage rash. Good
planning.
