Shouldn't the outboard rib on the HS be closed (no lightening holes)
When the elevator is deflected the holes will expose the inside of the
structure. Anyone concerned about mice or birds nesting in there?

I've been thinking about this too. I may rivet a light sheet of
aluminum over them. There's no stopping insects, but these holes are
rather huge and ugly too. I have seen people use wide metalized tape
to cover holes like this, but considering the potential failure mode, I
think a 0.015 aluminum might be better. Other opinions?

Another local builder here was planning on filling in the recess created by
the rib flange on the end of the horizontal stab & the elevator horn with
foam/fibreglass. Partly for show & to keep out rodents/birds, but also as he
was worried about rocks getting stuck in there jamming his elevator when
using gravel strips, which we have many of up here in Northern BC. I've been
considering this as well.

Hmmm . . . maybe something to check on preflight.

Hi guys,

Similar holes in the end ribs of the Locheed Super Connie flaps were
covered with fabric patches doped in place for the very reason you
mentioned....keep the birds out. I guess this gives away my age, o
well...good luck

Sounds like a good reason to raise the flaps when you park and for
gust locks on the alerons.

Mice might get into a 1/4 inch gap but not birds.

Elevators, not ailerons. And yes a bird could nest in them real easily
if you didn't lock it at neutral.
One would think it would whistle too... (the plane, not the birds, he
would be too scared).
