Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Rivet Callout E 905 to E907?

Author: JVonDolen@... Time: Sun Mar 10, 2002 12:35 am PST Link

Hi Folks,

I'm a new guy, working on the left elevator. I can't seem to find the rivet
callout for the two rivets attaching the root rib to the trim spar. Would it
be a 426AD3-3.5? And that gusset that's used there, E-921, do you drill and
rivet it without the top skin in place?
I'm slightly concerned that unless at least one skin was in place installing
the gusset might change the geometry a little bit and try to twist the skins.

I bought a tail kit from someone and only had to build the two elevators. My
first day working on the right one I dimpled two holes in the skin, but after
that I settled down and built a decent elevator, I guess. I was surprised how
challenging this is and how easy it is to make a mistake. I'm ready to start
on the trim tab now and feeling much more confident but still intimidated.
And finally I want to say that this is giving me just an unbelievable amount
of enjoyment and gratification, in spite of my worries and
glacial pace.

John,

I checked my plans and completed elevators. The two rivets that hold the
root rib end to the trim spar are probably 470AD3-3.5's. Just use the
standard guidelines for rivet length (i.e. insert the 3.5 rivet and
check protruding length - should be 1.5 times the rivet diameter.) It is
a 470 (round head) though, not a 426 flush head.

Now this should make you feel better. You asked about the gusset. So I
think to myself, "what gusset?" I look on the plans - "oh, THAT gusset!"
Now I have "deer-in-the-headlight eyes." You see, that gusset isn't
mentioned in my instructions, only on the drawings. So you guessed it -
I didn't install it. I guess I'll be asking Van's for an opinion.

In case you didn't get this hint - make SURE you install the elevator
control horns on the skeleton before you install the skins. This is
backwards from the way some versions of the instructions recommend. If
you do it the way the plans state, you'll have a heck of a time bucking
the rivets.

So this building thing is supposed to be, and is, a learning experience.
These lists are indispensable for learning the right way, avoiding
mistakes, and as you see here, finding mistakes. Don't be concerned -
just keep building.

Good luck!
