Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: HS nose ribs bucking bar recommendation

Author: "malcolm_wheatley" <malcolm_wheatley@...> Time: Sun Mar 24, 2002 5:00 am PST Link

A while back -- Jan/ Feb/ time -- a 'regular' in either this or the
Matronics forum recommended a specific bucking bar from, I think,
Avery. It was supposed to be ideal for the HS nose ribs. I'm about
to order some bucking bars and would like to pick this one up as
well. I've hunted through the archives (my own and elsewhere) but
can't find the message. Can anyone throw any light on it?

The one you want is part #685 from Avery. It looks kind of like a railroad
spike. Those first few rivets were probably the most frustrating part of
the whole project so far! I tried to buck them with one of the bars I got
in the standard kit from Avery and ended up dinging the skin. The angled
face on the small bucking bar works really well.

I tried to make do with what I had and that was a mistake. That portion of
my project to date is by far the least satisfying result. It'll work but a
modest amount of filler will be required to hide the recess. (too much
air--not enough backup)

I made mine from an actual railroad spike. It was easy to grind to shape,
worked well & best of all was free. The hard part was pulling it out of the
tracks between trains........ ;-)

Thanks, everyone, for the replies. Looks like #685 was the one...
we're some way from the railroad, here, so I'll pass up on the
opportunity to craft my own from a tie!
