Being the procrastinator that I am, I finally decided to call in my
local EAA Tech Counsellor just before I ran out of things to rivet.
I had left the bottom center skins off of both wings, and part of the
top skins off the fuselage. Yes I even cleaned the shop and put on a
fresh shirt!

Alas, I discovered what I suspected all along,,, most EAA types are
cut from the same mold. After about three fun filled hours of
shootin the breeze, checking out cars, discussing the hangar space
crisis, middle east crisis, war on terrorism, etc. etc. He got up to
leave and realized he hadn't done an inspection! We did look over
the plane and he complimented my riveting, but I guess there's a long
checklist of things he was supposed to have done.

Anyway, he said his local chapter likes to "visit" builders whenever
possible, so I suspect the next visit will include a caravan of EAA
types! A slightly different crowd than the gang of bikers that
usually frequent the driveway.

My wife asked for fair warning so she can be "at the spa".

I fully endorse the idea of EAA visits, they're likely to save a few
lives. But I wonder if there really is such a thing as an "insurance
discount". Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Yea. I wondered the same thing. I read some of the fine print/gossip in the
more popular Insurance policys. Suppose to get a 10% discount if you have
had 3 inspections during build of plane.
By the time I get mine done I won't be able to afford full coverage anyway
( many companys are leaving ). I had one such "inspection" so far during
rudder build and can honestly say I was more concerned about quality then
the inspector. We know the right way and wrong way to do things in these
kits and have to fly them eventually so I think we have more motivation to
do it right than a discount can provide. I want several people to look at
it before I fly but I would bet they won't find any missing wing bolts or
fuel lines rubbing the exaust. I think it's a good idea but only if the tech
inspector is from the same mold and not just a 172 mechanic.

Yeah, mine hadn't flown in years and the first and last plane he built was 20 years ago.

The 10% discount sounds good, but you know they'll just raise the rates another 20%.
Gosh, is my disdane for insurance companies showing?
