The EAA is hoping to provide some input to Avemco, its insurance
partner, after the carrier decided to stop issuing policies for some
homebuilt aircraft. The insurer, which is featured prominently in EAA
promotions, announced last week it will not renew or take on new
policies on certain high-performance homebuilts. These include
Velocities, Glasairs, LongEZs and some RVs. The company said it's
losing money insuring homebuilts. The announcement clearly took the
EAA by surprise and President Tom Poberezny issued a late-afternoon
press release Wednesday. According to Poberezny, EAA has helped solve
insurance issues in the past and wants to be involved with this one.
EAA staff members have been in contact with Avemco people gathering
information. "To leave large groups of homebuilt aircraft without
coverage is simply unacceptable," said Poberezny, "We are asking for
data and answers to back up these reported losses." EAA staff will be
meeting soon with the insurer to offer their suggestions. Reaching
for a broader stroke of the positive-PR pen Poberezny added, "When
similar situations in insurance coverage have emerged in the past,
EAA has met the challenges to keep our members' aircraft flying. EAA
is just as committed now to finding solutions and securing coverage
across the broad spectrum of aircraft flown by our members."
